MSD 6AL Issues

So, I wire up my 94 with a brand new 6AL, coil harness, rpm switch and shift light.

I fire it up. I warm it up and wind it up to check the shift light. Everything works. No smell, no smoke. Then I start loading it up, lights, heater, delco bose up high. Still on the ramps.

Car dies and will not restart. Battery seems to have power for lights, windows, etc.

The car has been apart for a few weeks with no tender on the battery. Did I just drain it by loading it up? I took a read at it was 12.3. I have it on the charger now.

Thoughts?

Also, I have it munted with 2 of the 4 vibration mounts only. Do you have to use all 4? I wouldn't think so but figured I would ask.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Might be on to something

Ok, well I might be on to something.

I had previously done the 6 light mod (fogs + high) years ago. I was grounding the fog light to the headlight ground on the driver side.

When I got the 6al, I was looking to clean this up a bit. I removed the extra line from the headlight ground and grounded the foglight, the rpm switch, and the 6al to a hole I had drilled to mount my FIPK sleeve. This makes for a real clean install as you cannot see it from above at all.

On the first msd start, the car fired right up. I tested the rpm switch and shift light and both worked as adverstised. I turned on a bunch of accessories and still fine. I turned on the lights, then it all stopped.

I am thinking my next step is to separate these two grounds and put the 6al and the rpm switch back at the headlight ground and go from there. Or should I do the main ground at the junction by the battery?

My experience with MSD 6A ignition is if you do not have sufficient voltage, then the MSD will not operate and loss of ignition will occur. I would check the charging circuit with all your acc load. I have also had this problem on my sand rail with loss of voltage. Some MSD specs require 1 amp per 1K rpm. My app... 97ss 383 - D1 AFR 190, MM6. I know SLP, by the way. B.

***solved***

I re-routed the grounds. Ran the MSD box itself to the ground on the passenger shock tower. Ran the RPM switch and the foglight ground to the headlight ground on the passenger side.

Started right up and idles very smooth. We are back. Now to find room for the next step of window switch and NOS...

mzgp5x, your id looks familiar, almost GM or EDS-ish... I am sure I have talked to you before.

Yes, worked @ GM in CCRW Robotics group. Long gone now 3+ years. Liked the work, but, UAW and Mgt drove me out. Kept the mz... handle. But, I still am a member of slp, and, I am a gear-head (Can't stop... 97ss 383-D1, MM6). Possibly I will see you on an event and trade notes? Low voltage on those MSD units will prevent them form function. Good luck our there, it's brutal these days. B.
