fuel pump not running tried changing relay did not work

ok car wont start but turns over fine has spark off of coil lead but fuel pump not operating. I tried to change the relay and same result. i get 12v + on i believe the orange wire witch is power to relay but i can not find any power going out to the pump. looking at the relay wiring diagram i should have power out to the pump from the gray lead going to the back of the car is this correct? and if i connect 12v positive to the prime connector will that make the pump run regardless of the relay?

also anyone change the pump? any advice on this job? with my multi meter i only found 2vdc on one other wire and nothing else how can i make sure the relay is functioning befroe i think about dropping the tank to look at the pump.

thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Ed

You'll have to apply power and ground to two of the terminals (the coil) and then check for continuity on the other two terminals.
BTW I think the relay is ground side controlled, so it would always have power. You might want to check a wiring diagram to make sure. I'd trace the problem around with a multimeter before dropping the tank. You could always jump the wires that go to the pump at the relay to try to split the problem up.

thanks green demon im looking at the wiring diagram and the wire to thje pump through the level sender is grey so you are saying jumper the power wire back to the pump to see if it runs. if it runs then wiring bad and if iot does not then the pump is bad. is that the idea? also the fuel pump prime connector what is that can anyone tell me. thanks again

Re: fuel pump not running tried changing relay did not work

ok did some searching and found out where and what the fuel pump prime connector is. tried giving the pump prime connector 12vdc from the battery and it did nothing. no noise could be heard from the pump in my quiet garage. I just read where the ground is and also where to test the fuel pump connector by the left rear wheel so i will test there in just a minute.

does the key switch need to be on when connecting to the prime connector or does that matter?

I had a similar problem which I thought was the relay; infact it turned out that the ground wire for the FP went bad. I cut the ground, crimped on a ring terminal and re-grounded it; works great now; never had a problem since.

Where is this ground at?

did you give it positive or negative? where do you test it by the rear left wheel?

Check power and ground at the fuel pump connector. Remember you will only have power to the fuel pump for about two seconds with the KOEO. If you have power and ground there you need a new fuel pump.

I have seen a couple times the bulkhead connector get jacked up. It's an easy check.

It is very unlikely a wiring problem. I would check the fuse and leave it at that. Next unplug the wiring connector back by the rear left wheel and apply power and ground directly to the appropriate wires that run the fuel pump. If you dont hear it running, the fuel pump is the problem. You'll need some long jumper wires.

I cut a hatch to replace mine and I'm glad I did because I have had 2 fuel pumps go bad. This is a good opportunity to get a racetronix setup.
