fuel gauge stops working sporadicly

I have a 2000 Z28. Recently the fuel gauge will go to "E" for no reason. The check gauges light will also come on. Usually, within 5-15 min it will return to normal. Any ideas? Fuel sending unit?

Looked into replacing the sending unit. It appears that it is made into the fuel pump. Looks like about $600 with labor...so I guess it will have to wait until I have spare cash laying around.

The level sensor is a rheostat with a float/lever attached to it. The sensor is riveted to the fuel pump support assembly. It can be replaced. Up until a few years ago, you could only get a replacement level sensor from GM along with the pump support assembly (excluding the pump). I believe you can now buy a separate replacement sensor. It isn't "made into the fuel pump".
