Fuel Gauge

The fuel guage nearly caused me a heart attack today... I was driving down the feeder road and tried to pass somebody and my car started stuttering so I then slowed down and when I got to the light it was close to dying. So I turned into the gas station and my gauge was in between half and the E, but I filled it up anyway and ended putting 15.4 gallons in it, is that normal? Is it the guage or something else?

BTW car ran normal after I filled up with gas and when I filled it up it goes WAY past the F.

The tank is designed in a V type shape, so thats why it does that. When reading it assume a 1/4 tank less than it reads. F= 3/4 1/2=1/4, and so on.

No it's not accurate even when the engine is off. I think I did something wrong or something got stuck but I dont wanna go through the whole monster process of changing the pump again.

Have you taken a look at the fuel sending unit. I have to replace mine because it shows over Full when there is 3/4 of a tank.

the sending units are very very VERY delicate. takes nothing at all to fubar them. Hanging the float on the lip of the tank when taking the assembly out can screw it up. Other than that, GM gauges in f-bodies have always sucked. I am in the process of buy a fuel cell sending unit and sticking it the tank in my thirdgen. Sure i have to fab a collar for it to it fits.. but overall, it will actually work, and thats $50 vs $499.99 for a new sending unit, And the thirdgen does not even have a fuel pump on it lol. it's a mechanical.

But yea. fuel sending units from GM are pretty much junk. Removing it from the tank unless you a very careful and do it slowly can easily screw it up, making it a bigger piece of junk.

+1

And +1 on the V Shaped tank reply as well.....

Does anyone notice how the cars stay full for like the first day you fill up, then the needle actually moves down to E as you drive???

I've only ran OUT of fast about three times in mine so that should tell you that, yeah, sometimes they aren't exactly perfectly correct....
