I need to have some steel braided line made today to replace my plastic lines! these are the lines from the fuel rail fitting to the fuel filter and where ever the return line connects. This is on a 1997 3.8 V-6

If any of you know exactly how long the original plastic lines are please post as well as what kind of fitting connects the lines to the fuel filter and return line under the car!

Pictures of how they are under the car and in the wheel well area would be especially helpful closeups of how they connect to stuff would also be of help.

The line from the fuel filter forward is steel. It terminates under the rocker panel, at the front edge of the driver's door, maybe 12" in from the rocker panel. That's where the plastic lines begin. The return line from the fuel pressure regulator, and the purge line from the EVAP canister to the EVAP solenoid end at the same point. From there back to the rear of the car the lines are metal.

You will want to run -6AN lines for fuel supply and return. You can get "compression" type fittings that attach to the steel lines, and have the -6AN male connections.

 

Thanks for your hep, I went a different route though and had a hose guy make me new lines. He used 300psi lines with (I believe hydraulic band crimps) to secure the hose to my original fittings.

here is what he came up with to rid my car of the plastic lines. I highly doubt I will have a problem anytime soon with this setup. Image some day you open your hood and see fuel spraying on of all things the coilpacks. Makes you think doesn't it!

 

Did you have a '98 with the abrasion poroblem?

 

No, it is a 1997 and where the line sprung a leak it wasn't touching anything. Was a pinhole leak about 4 inches from the fuel rail connector and just started spraying a steady stream of gas on the valve cover mounted coilpacks. The car didn't stop running with this leak either. I smelled a faint gas smell inside the car and pulled over and imagine my surprise when I opened the hood to find the coilpacks being soak. I am really surprised the car didn't catch fire.

 

I doubt I'll see my braided SS system spraying fuel on anything when I open the hood.

If those hoses are rubber, they are not NHRA legal.

 

The car has a 6 banger, and is a grocery getter. No need to be nhra legal
