Is Aftermarket Fuel Pump Wiring Really Needed?

I just purchased a 255Lph pump for my 95Z28. I was checking out the racetronics site for that wiring harness. they make it seem like its a for sure thing needed. I then read some stuff that said most of that is just advertising, trying to get you to buy there product. I have a feeling if I put my pump in and used stock wiring everything would work fine. this is not a extremely intense high high flowing pump. And I think that even the 255Lph pump with a few less volts from not using aftermarket wiring would still be plenty for my NA 383. LE2. estimating a hair over 500hp (I hope).

If you think that the extra wiring is really needed, then how about going around the kit, just running a 8AUG wire back with a basic relay wired into the system?.. I know how to solder and you can get 10feet of 8AUG wire for $10.

Thanks

Here are some walbro performance charts, assume you are installing the F20000169 255/LPH standard pump. There is a 10 gal/HR difference between 12V and 13.5V at the 40 lb range (58 Vs 68 GPH). I would install the pump, stick a straight pin in the wire close to the pump when it's running and see what the real voltage drop across your system is between the alternator post and the test point. The pump is only drawing a little over 8 amps, not a real big load. http://www.autoperformanceengineerin...l/fpspecs.html If it's under 12V then you could always add your own wire and relay.

yea that is a good idea. I will get my own voltage drop reading and go from there. But If I do need a thicker wire I can easily add my own, The kit is nice, but I dont need things to be plug and play simple like the kit is.

Thanks for the advise. I actually got a TRE Performance pump. I have heard some great things about it (apparently its quieter than the walbro also). @ under $70 you cant go wrong. here is some peoples comments on them: http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/af...r-try-tre.html

Thanks again

8awg is absurd overkill.
I'd use 12awg for good measure although 14awg would be fine too. And no you probably don't need to upgrade the wiring from stock. My Walbro 255 was getting about 1.5v less through the stock wiring (18awg I believe) than seen at the battery with the car running.
Also I never noticed increased noise when I swapped in my Walbro.
