1st gen optispark

Hey guys I'm having trouble finding a good vendor to buy a AC Delco optispark. I was wondering if any of you have a reputable source. Thanks in advance.

Can be hard to find, and they are rebuilt.

Best alternative:

https://petrisenterprises.com/

He is often backordered. I have yet to hear of any problems with the Petris Opti.

I did look at Petris but as you stated they are sold out. Be back in stock 7/2023.

What are the details of the problems with your Opti? Is it the original? How many miles?

Re: 1st gen optispark

Well I just installed this opti my original problems was that the motor wouldn't start during cold wet weather like morning dew not even a little ignition. As the day would get warmer it would start to backfire through the intake but still wouldn't start. When it finally got warm out it would start right up.

So after debating in my head I returned the opti for another one ( Napa ) and after installing it the motor has never run better smooth and tons of power start up no matter ambient temperature or weather. A few days went buy and I took it for a good ride the motor got up to temp and a few more minutes into the ride the motor shuts off dead. Tried turning it over and nothing firing at all just cranks over. Was going to get it towed but everyone was busy so I was going to tow it myself and it started right up this was like an hour later. Drove it home And it died in my driveway. Checked fuel pressure and perfect checked spark at the coil nothing. Changed the coil died again. Changed the icm and died again. So for me right now the only thing different between opti's is the opti. This will be my third Napa opti in 6 mo's but I can't find an ac Delco or delfi. I don't know what else to check.

Just got done chatting with Brad (the opti doc) and he suggested that when the vehicle gets up to operating temperature when it goes into closed loop that it has an air leak during feedback mode. More to investigate he suggests to unplug the O2 sensors and try so that's my next trick.

Have you ever scanned for codes? Have you run any tests to determine if the Opti signals are reaching the ICM?

Re: 1st gen optispark

I just realized you had previous posts in a thread with a problem you indicated was EXACTLY the same as yours. You never followed up on that thread. It was stilling giving you problems on a rainy day.

The next to last sentence “but we had a big rain and it died again” doesn’t sound like you solved the problem.

Ah yes I see the confusion I was saying that before I bought the new opti I tried sealing the old one up but it didn't work. Sorry about the way I worded it I can see why it was confusing. The new opti did solve that problem but now I have this new one that's why I think it's the opti again and am looking for a better one.

Checking for DTC codes and other sensor data would help a lot. This may not be the opti, and could be an intermittent/recurring problem. The harness that goes to the opti could also be causing this issue.

Like Injuneer suggest, performing the opti tests via shoebox's tutorial, and a scan would be a good next step.

I haven't tested the opti yet but I Wii soon. I do have a code #43 I'm in the process of checking it out.

Re: 1st gen optispark

DTC 43 is for the knock sensor. Very easy to check. Pull single blue wire off sensor, key on/engine off measure voltage from wire to engine block. Should be 5 volts. With wire still off sensor, measure resistance from sensor pin to engine block. Should be about 4,000 ohms (1993-95 only).

That DTC is not causing your problems.

Typical causes would be 16, 36, 41, 42. The fact it’s sensitive to moisture may be pointing to plug/coil wires. How old are they?

Re: 1st gen optispark

The plugs coil and wires are all new. I also replaced the icm, map, coolant temp sensor and iac. The guy that owned it before me thought the motor was out of a 96 but I researched it and it is a 93? That's why I changed all these components to reverse what he changed.
