worth ceramic coating the pistons?
it is only the skirt that gets coated correct? is it worth it? i knwo i wont be going over 9 lbs of boost, most likely 6 lbs is all ill run. ive also heard of ceramic coating the bearings, any benifit for a daily driver?
waste of $ for running relatively low boost. You will see some of guys are running coated pistons because they are pushing the motor hard and high boost. The main reason for coating the pistons because when uder high boost the pistons will get really hot. Coating help cooling down the pistons.

On a 2618 forging, the coating on the skirts is more of a scuff resistor more then thermodynamic advantage as the skirts are subjected to oil which help in cooling the pistons. however on the crowns of the piston the ceramics act as a shield to keep the heat in the combustion event and let more of it go out the exhaust rather then being absorbed into the piston and transfered through the rings to the cylnder walls for the cooling system to dissipate. in a turbocharged system this help minimally to create a quicker spooling condition by using the heat energy in the exhaust rather then wasting it in the cooling system and raising operating temps.. hope this helps.. but in fact it is an advantage in any given motor but the process is simply too expensive for an OEM manufacturer to add it to a production engine.

there is always a chance of the ceramic coating flaking off, but that will primarily depend on the coating process and how well the base item being coated is prepared for the treatment.
as for cryotreating , yes this is also a very good way to strengthen parts, it supercools the metal causing the molecules in the metal to pull tightly together and this helps to better align the moleculor structure of the parts material composition. it is almost like forging but using temperature to create the internal pressure rather then an outside source such as done in the archaic days when they heats the material and pounded it to compress the molecules into one another making the steel denser and more aligned.
modern day forging uses larger machines to compress the material during certain stages of the manufacturing process, this is how you add the strength to the part. also adding/mixing alloys will give the metals some exceptional properties that will better suit them for their intended purpose.

If the skirt coatings flake, it would probably end up in the oil pan. If the face coatings get hot enough to flake off, you have bigger problems.

Sounds like a plan, the only thing is chances are your pistons will get covered in carbon anyways, but yes it's mostly just good to keep the head in the chamber, I don't see it being a great thing to be honest, considering your spark plug with it's sharp tip will most likely be the first thing to create a hot spot.
