Whats the highest boost I can do a 355??

I might go with a 355 build up. I wanted a procharger. I wanted to reach maybee 700 rwhp with a procharged 355. How much boost should I go with to get there. I want the car to be a reliable dependable car. I dont drive the car every day. Maybee 15 -20 minutes a day the most. - Mike

With supporting heads (AFR's), custom cam, and bolt-ons I would think 18-20psi will get you there depending on which model blower.

15psi is about the max on pump gas. Hp will depend on the heads, the cam, how high you are willing to rev it, and the size of the blower

Assuming 15% drivetrain loss, you'll need about 825 fwhp to reach your goal of 700 rwhp. I don't think 15 psi on a 355 will get you there. And as Rich pointed out, higher boost probably won't happen on pump gas.

Get a D1 SC. You will see rwhp close that with an M6.

Rich

addendum: should say "it's possible". Not many 700rwhp cars are out there. But it can be done.

Even assuming a 100% power gain on a blower-oriented 355, he would be off nearly 100 rwhp from his "goal" of 700 rwhp, probably more. Unless he wanted to dip into race gas, serious intercooling (not ATIs twin setup that comes with the D1SC), and/or water/alcohol injection.

Josh: I know it can be done, since I have my own and have experience with a few other LT1 cars making power in that range. But I want to make clear that I didn't say it was easy or cheap. Most blower LT1's running on pump gas are in the 600rwhp range. Each addtional hp is harder to get! You have to concentrate on keeping the air charge cool, as you suggested, as well as air flow. Especially on the ehaust side, which is crucial on a blower car and a problem specifically with a 4th gen.

Anyway, a specific hp goal is not something I would advise. Decide what you can spend and then get the most you can for that amount of $$$.

What about 600rwhp. On a 355. with 15 pound procharger with the right heads and cam can it be done. I'm debating to go with a 15 boost procharger on a 355 build up, 383 stroker or 396 stroker. I cannot make up my mind. I just want to go the cheapest way to reach my goal but still stay on pump gas and dependable

Rich- I agree with you 100% . I was just pointing out that he won't reach 700 rwhp on a 355 on pump gas @ 15 psi, as he had suggested. I would think that he would need to see 18-20 psi to reach his goal?

Speaking of beefcake rwhp numbers, anything new on your car Rich?

It's currently on the back burner since I just bought a race car, literally (picked it up yesterday). I spent most of the last few weeks looking at cars and have been pretty involved in that. I had the Camaro out just twice to the track this year and did see my fastest trap to date. It dynoed 660rwhp thorugh a loose converter off of the nitrous. Then, the thrust bearing went, so the motor is out while I decide what to do. Probably won't get to it until the spring. I am thinking of a couple of different options. Probably I will go back to a six-speed and keep it off the track.

For that kind of $$$ you won't see that kind of hp unless you can do all of the work yourself. I'd say that you should pop a set of good pistons in an otherwise stock bottom end, spend the rest of the money on the top end, induction, exhaust, and fuel system. As far as specifics, how much will be dong yourself?

Re: Whats the highest boost I can do a 355??

I was just gonna take my 94 camaro m6 to a shop and have this all done. They told me they would give me a 12bolt rearend, clutch, 396 stroker, 15 pound procharger - labor, parts, and all - roughly 15k. So basically thats my plan. But for a 355 build up with a 15pound procharger - I think would be cheaper and give me what I'm looking for. I'm bascially going from a stock motor with a hot cam and bolt ons to something more intense. Whatever I decide to get I'm defently getting a procharger with a high boost like 15. I'm sure I will be happy with that. Mike Fortuna selling his 93 camaro on this site. he has a 355 with 10 pd boost and is running a 10.94. So either a 396 or 355 I will go with. I just want soemthing with allot of rwhp that can get me into the mid -low 10's something for the street. - Mike

Re: Whats the highest boost I can do a 355??

Also my stock 10 bolt rearend. If I were to put drag radials on it and only really race from a roll without dumping the clutch at 6k. Do you think my rearend will hold up for a summer or so. I dont plan to dump the clutch at a dead stock at 6k. Just mostly from a roll I will gradually put the pedal down.
