At what point are head studs necessary?
I have done head gaskets with the motor in the car once. Heads cam out fine with studs. In my app the 12 point nut was only required on the #1 stud and the two ends under the valve cover.
IMO: If the motor is out do the stud, if not wait till you need it.

I put on Milodon studs years ago. The heads do go on without any problem. The problem I had was the valve covers. I had to grind them a little to fit. I also reused the studs on my motor rebuild a few years back. Never had any problems with blown head gaskets, etc. Highly recommend studs for a blower or nitrous.
I've been out of town..
I ran 17# consistently on ARP bolts and 1074's.. when I upped the boost it lifted the heads but never blew a head gasket.. I switched to ARP studs and cometic gaskets and have logged runs @ 27# boost and it still lifted the heads.. After that experience I don't necessarily subscribe to the theory that the studs provide (much) more clamping force than bolts..
FWIW, I always had a good tune in the car, and never "blew" a head gasket.. hell, I ran the same plugs in the car until I got shamed in to changing them. After every high-boost pass, I could expect coolant to be blown out in the engine bay.. Safe- NO, but it didn't appear to ever hurt any parts..
The new motor is apart now, and I'm undecided on what to do as far as head gaskets go... O-ring or cometic.. There are LOTS of super fast cars running cometic gaskets now..
good luck!
