Re: What do people think of the cobra head

Lonnie's point is the best, if you call KN or SB any other filter company, and ask what CFM the filters are rated for, you can then assess which filter will be inadequate. Some of the 800rwhp Renegade Mustangs run 18" long filters, 4" inlet. Now KN says that that filter is rated for 2300 cfm. The filter I got from SB is only 8" long, and they say it's good for 1600 cfm or what my YSi is rated for. I'm not going to be able to find out since I can't get to fit on my car. But you can test by checking to see if you have any vacuum at the inlet. Needless to say vacuum is a problem.

The cobrahead I have is so rigid that only major vacuum would make it collapse IMO.

John, do you by chance know how Chris runs his YSi on the LT1? Is it the same clearance as yours, or do you have a little more room for an inlet pipe? (I have his brackets) I'm thinking of just putting a screen on it and being done with it since it won't be driven except in only the best of weather conditions. Only thing I'd be worried about is the warm air, which is why I'm curious how Chris did his since it obviously seems to work just fine.

Marc how are you getting 18-19lbs boost are you over sping your D1.

Just got the K&N filter you have on your web page
Hey,
Sorry been busy and haven't checked the board lately.
The opening to the impeller on the D-1 is about the same size, I epoxy'd some rubber rand (I work in the shoe industry) and made it 4"

I'm not overspinning the D-1, I thought it would make about 15#'s but hey it makes what it makes for boost.

I still need to get a picture of my green filter, just lazy.

Marc

Re: What do people think of the cobra head

Chris' setup is set closer to the nose, so there is more room. The reason mine is so tight is that we went with the base Vortech crank pulley setup and worked from there. I could have rigged up a different solution and created more room.

He races with no filter.

I have a smaller filter for the street, and I have a custom screen that Chris made that I might try at the track.

John, does he use a pipe on the inlet, or just drawing hot air from right next to the headers? My old setup used a pipe, but no filter. If he's doing ok with drawing air right from the inlet of the compressor near the headers, then I'm not even going to worry about an inlet pipe.

He's drawing air from down there, no inlet pipe, and has gone 159mph.

Keep in mind that the longer the inlet pipe is the more it can affect the car off the line.

But you will need something for the street.

The air is probably moving too fast to gain much heat from the headers when the car is moving.

I was never going to worry about it, but a lot of LS1 guys seem to think it's a problem.

Well a setup that got (cold) ram air would be better but where would you mount the blower... that's the issue.
