Were is the NOOB section!? looking for some input
Were is the NOOB section!? looking for some input
Ok heres the deal last night i was out playing with a buddy who has a nice head and cam ls1 and he walked me hard every time. so I need more power and turboing has been something ive wanted to do for a LONG time.
heres my setup.
lt1 LE3 heads LE2 cam 1.6 pro mag, morels, ported intake, 58mm tb, 30# injectors, headman long tubes, 3" duals.
MY goal- Stock bottom end pushing 550 rwhp
Now my question
1. The LE3 heads 2.02/1.60 have a few areas in the runners that burned through the walls when they ported them and were sealed up with silicone. do I need to get rid of these heads? if so is it worth goin with a ported head or just use stock to meet my goals?
2. since im staying with a stock or stock ported heads my compresion ratio is going to be on the higher side even with the deepest dish pistons. so what I need to know is with the stock displacement what pistons should I look for and what would be my max safe boost levels with pump (93) gas. oh and YES I will be air to air intercooling.
2a. would punching the block out to .30 or .60 make a big enough difference in compression ratio to make it worth while?
3. since this isnt going to be a max effort build would you recommend using a turbo from a production car/truck or buying a t3/t4 from a manufacturer? also what size would I be looking for?
4. Im pretty sure 500-550 is starting to get to the upper limits of the 2 bolt block but ill have to live with that. my question is will the stock PM rods be ok?
Ok I think thats all I need to know the rest im "searching" for. thanks

umm maybee some one else can chime in here, but i think standard practice is to weld the hole shut and report them and not using silicone???????

I read your web page. So your car ran a 13.4 with a 2.58 60ft? Then you put the heads, cam and exhaust on? My suggestion would be to slap a set of Mickey Thompson drag radials on there before dumping a butt load of cash into a turbo setup and run that dude again. You thought you were spinning tires before! Slap a turbo on that thing and you'll be watching him pull you ever worse while your sitting there going up in smoke. Don't think you'll go from a roll either. 2nd and 3rd will go up in smoke also with a turbo without the right tire. If your still going that route though, you should be able to get a stock ported LT1 head with the right piston down to 9:1cr which should be ok if your air to air. No reason why you couldn't put a water/methanol kit on there to help things out also. 8 to 12psi should be fine.

Wow forgot about those times lol ya those were a couple years ago. my 60's are still suffering with the street tires but my best so far has been 12.8 @ 112 with 2.02 and 2.1 60,s. I have a set of MT street ET's ill be using this weekend to get my times down plus I found out that I was running out of fuel up top. so with the new pump and stickies I should be lower 12's. and that race with my buddy was from a 40mph roll both time. So ya Im working on the traction issues
Now back to question 2. how much of a difference would you see with ported LE's Vs stock. Or how about just putting bigger valves in stock unported head? thanks for the help!
EDIT: Lloyd cleared up the silicone issue. its been a while since I installed the heads and couldnt remember exactly were I saw the silicone. But its in the intake runners from the porting below the rocker arm stud. the silicone was used on the studs to seal the runner.
