washer fluid?
washer fluid?
my tuner said that they have used straight washer fluid to cool a blown cobra or mustang GT. forget which one he said, either way anyone else here of that? i know alot of guys with fast cars that have been tuned by him and had work done so they are a great company out of Stow,Ohio. i'm running alky/water 50/50 right now.
Re: washer fluid?
Windshield washer fluids are methanol/water mixtures, usually with some colorant. The percentage of methanol varies between ~25-50%. It can be used as an injection fluid in a pinch, but I prefer to be sure what I am using and mix up my own 1/1 mixture.

Re: washer fluid?
Whoa nelly, thats not the best idea unless done right, reason being I used to sell the stuff and some of it sits in the back for 12 months waiting for next season. If you do use it buy a name brand like prestone and get it at a high volume place like target or walmart. I would see some stuff settled in the bottle of the bottles also. Our store stuff would freeze at 25-30*, which shows it was mostly water.
Re: washer fluid?
Locally we buy methanol by the drum in the summer for use in the race cras. But in the winter we get 5 gallon pails. Current price is ~3.50/g. So, a 5 gal. pail is ~$20. Mixed 1:1 with water this makes 10 gal. of injection fluid, which lasts a LONG time. The price per gallon mixed 1:1 is therefore ~$2, about the same as washer fluid and known composition.
Use washer fluid only in a pinch, IMHO.

this is from the snow performance FAQ page......
8. Can I use windshield washer fluid?
Although most contain some glycol and detergent, most windshield washer fluids are up to 50% alcohol (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) and make an excellent Boost CoolerŽ. Try to find one that indicates "contains methanol".
heres another thought. i hear of using methanol like you use from home depot in the fuel tank to help with smog tests. are you getting any cooling benifit from putting it directly into the tank like this?????

Re: washer fluid?
I used the cheap 99 cent blue stuff. Approx 10.2:1, 383, with approx 14psi peak, with the progressive alkycontrol kit. Worked great in 100deg temps last summer. My timing was not very aggressive though.
