Vortech questions
Vortech questions
I'm taking my ati P600B/twin intercoolers off the car. Too many problems with the tensioner and the blower is too loud. I am going to try a vortech. My setup is going to be for sale.
The model I was going to try was the V2 SQ with the aftercooler. I had a few questions about this setup:
1.) Does the aftercooler fit under the stock hood?
2.) I planned on running 10-12 pounds of boost. What pulley combo would I be looking at. I noticed vortech offers a lot of different pulley combos.
3.) Vortech says on their website that the use of a race bypass valve is necessary for 10 pounds of boost or more. How would the race bypass be installed, ie. would it just bolt-on or require some custom work?
4.) Would a solid intake pipe be necessary? Where do I get one of those. I made my own for the ati.
Thanks-a-lot,
Ed

The vortech intercooler does indeed fit under the hood ... http://www3.telus.net/public/mackenz...oEnginebay.jpg
I am currently running a 3.125 x 7" set up and I see 8psi of boost at 6,100 rpm on my 383 setup. If I'm not mistaken, the largest crank pulley Vortech offers is a 6.66" and the smallest blower pulley is a 2.75", that may get you to 10psi. To get to 12 psi of boost you may need a T-trim.
I ran the stock vortech 6psi S-trim bypass valve at 11psi for a year and a half, no issues.
A solid intake pipe would be of great value. Mine is a Brad Brandt pipe. I'm sure there are others available.
Hope this helps

Why not just sell the p600b head unit and try and find a d series procharger. That way you should be able to use your current intercooler setup?
I've heard the D series is quieter than the p600b? I personally do not know this.

I cant hear my blower after 3min of run time. Never had a problem with my tensioner either.

I have an S-trim with the stock pullies (not sure what size) and I see anywhere from 10 to 12 psi depending when the tranny decides to shift. I shoot for the 6k shift but they are not consistant. Also this kit was supposed to be the 7psi kit. But I believe I got the 9 psi kit. I wouldnt worry to much about the larger bypass initially but maybe plan it to be safe.
After taking the ati blower stuff off yesterday, it is amazing how much room there is now
I have always had problems with the tensioner, so have others. It is just poorly designed. I don't know about the other ones on the P1 or D1 though. I really like the idea of helical cut gears in the Vortech. Paxton has a great blower too with these type of gears (Novi 2000), but they do not make a bracket.
After looking at a compressor map of the s-trim on vortech's website. it appears the s-trim can make up to 12 pounds of boost, but with slightly less efficiency (around 70%) than if you ran 8 pounds of boost. I will be calling Vortech today and get their recommendations.
You have to wonder about how effective those small ati intercoolers are. They are only 6"x9"x3.5" deep. A lot of piping too. I don't really like how they designed the 2-into-1 pipe leading to the intake. It is too close to the radiator and antilock brake unit.

I have owned an F1, D1SC and P600b. By far the P600b has been the loudest. I would say the D1SC has been the quietest.

I never had problems with my tensioner on the P600B but the one that came with the D-1 kit sucked. I had to take it to SD-concepts to cure what ailed it.Marc
Yeah, everything fits under the hood just fine. There isn't any room left but then I guess we are used to that. Take a look at my web site to see the fitup I did.
LWM, where did you get your 7" pulley?

Tim,
Great job on the inlet pipes. I may end up doing that also. What was the problem with the MAF being on the non pressure side? With my ati, I got some surges here and there, so it got relocated to near the t-body like yours.
How do you like the performance of the vortech and the aftercooler? How much boost are you runnin?
Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
There wasn't any problem with the MAF on the non-pressure side, I just like it in the stock location and wanted the blow off to vent to atmosphere instead of being recirculated.
At 6 lbs of boost I wasn't overly impressed, it ran nice but wasn't the monster power I had hoped so now I am building another motor with forged pistons and a few other goodies and want to go to 10 lbs of boost. That should give me the kick I am after.

Well, I ordered the Vortech today from T-byrne. They had the best price.
I will let CamaroZ28.com know what I think about this kit upon installation. I am going with a stock vortech blower pulley and 6.66 crank pulley. This way the blower is under a 3 year warranty. I am looking for around 10-12 pounds of boost. This should get interesting because I have the dyno numbers from the ati. If there are any more recomendations please let me know.
BTW, I love the idea of a pretty quiet blower, the ati I have is ridiculously loud, good for a teenager.
If anyone is looking for the ati twin intercoolers or P600B blower, I have it available.
Thanks,
Later Ed
