Turbo or Supercharged LT1????...Info on what kind of PSI I can run?

Hey guys a buddy of mine is looking at picking up either an LT1 or LS1 fbody or maybe a C4 vette as a weekend project car.

Right now I think the LT1 car either vette or F body is his best bet. However, I do not know a lot about turbo'ing an LT1 vehicle. What kind of boost can we run fairly safely on the stock block? I know with SC's 6 psi is relatively safe and people can run into issues as it goes past 8psi. We're talking stock bottom end at this point...the other big reason I told him to get an LT1 car is the much cheaper initial price lets him have plenty in the bank for a pontential motor build up if/when the bottom end grenades.

Thanks for the help and info fellas

6-8psi max IMO. Turbo'ing isnt cheap...expect to pay atleast $4-6k easy for the kit. Then another 3500-4k forged shortblock...then aftermarket heads to bring compression down...$1500-2k...cam?....lifetrs/pushrods?....

You can see it will get expensive in a hurry.

Tell him to get a 96-97 LT1 then, OBDII inspections are easy...no rollers for smog.

Lots of new reports about greenhouse gases coming to the forefront. Lots of warranted pressure on the govement. It would be naive to think OK will be emissions free a few years from now. Even if it takes 5 years to get inspection back, you ride would need to b 20 yrs old to be exempt... just a heads up thats all.

Re: Turbo LT1????...Info on what kind of PSI I can run?

Whats up everyone?! I'm the guy Iroc is talking about. Im new here, and basically a f-body n00b. I'm big into imports, as I've owned a few over the last 6 years, and have worked on and around various friends vehicles as well. My current DD is an 05 Subaru STI. Since I'm pretty happy with it so far as far as practicality (4 doors, AWD, good mileage, cheap to maintain), but I'm wanting something of a different flavor.

Echoing Iroc, im looking for a cheapish platform to make a fun weekend car with. My contraints are just that it be RWD, pref. V8, manual trans., and I'd like it to have reasonable potential to run low 11's / high 10's in the 1/4 without spending more than the value of the car. I'm liking the C4 vette as a potential platform.

Engine bay is toght for a turbo setup. Also, A C4 with an LT1 will run you $10-15k in good low mile condition. You can get an fbody for $5-7k with low miles.

Re: Turbo LT1????...Info on what kind of PSI I can run?

For every turbo'd V8 i've seen, i've seen 10 blown V8's. Obviously supercharging seems like a more popular route to go. I know turbos are more unique and have much more potential, but they can really shoot the cost of a project through the roof even without breaking things.

What should companies (ie vortech) should I look into for the supercharged route, for say, a C4. Going the FI route, what types of supporting mods (larger injectors & pump, oem or aftermarket cam, clutch, cooling, etc) do most f-body's require? Also, what do you guys do to tune these things? Any guys out there possibly with blown or turbo'd C4's please feel free chime in!!
