Turbo cam question...

I am thinking about having a comp cam ground to the following:

230/224 (.544/.560) 116LSA + 4 (-5 degrees overlap)

I would assume this should pass emissions a 383 LT1. Any particular reason Why it might not? Also, any idea where peak power might roll in at with this cam?

Here is my setup:

383LT1 (8.5:1)
AFR210’s ported by LE
DIY Front mount Turbo kit (T76) using SLP shorty headers

Re: Turbo cam question...

Can I ask why you're going with more intake than exhaust? I thought the idea with turbo cams was usually more exhaust duration to compenstate for the increased backpressue from the turbine.

The “generally accepted” theory is shorter duration to increase exhaust velocity and to prevent reversion due to high backpressure. The saying is that if you have a non-optimal exhaust setup (log manifolds for example) then the intake duration should be greater than the exhaust. Now if you have a free flowing setup then the exhaust can be made similar to the intake (due to less back pressure) like the cam in your sig. These are general concepts…but others have shown that S/C cams can work just as well for a turbo. The general concept with S/C’s is that the duration on the exhaust should be larger to allow the extra charge from the blower to escape into the exhaust (since backpressure isnt an issue). Again, general concepts and real world aren’t always the same. I am just hoping to get feedback from people with experience with similar cam that I have mentioned.

Nobody has experience with emissions and these cams?

Re: Turbo cam question...

I think INTMD8 tried a "blower cam", a "turbo cam", and a single pattern all in a turbo LT1. He made the most power with the 224/224-113 cam.

Hmmm…it would have -2 degrees overlap right? I suspect that should pass emissions correct? Hotcam has (-1 degree overlap) and it passes. Is there anything else I need to look for with cam as far as emissions go, or does the overlap tell the whole story? Thanks.

Re: Turbo cam question...

That cam will work perfectly fine. If tuned right you can get almost any cam to pass a sniffer. Just have to run the EGT's up pretty high to clean up the exhaust.
