Turbo Build - Single 76mm W/ PICS

Startup vid from 8/08 added..... Long overdue but not much

***UPDATE - 8/30/08***

Car is up and running. First start was last Sunday, since then been trying to track down mysterious no-start issue. Turns out the exhaust, which contacts the starter heat shield, had burned through a piece of rubber covering the positive lead on the starter. Fixed that and so far so good.

Probably only have 20mins drive time on it but car pulls pretty nice. Trying to keep it easy with no real tuning thus far. Any throttle above 2000rpm yields a real nice semitruck-like turbo sound. 5psi by ~3500. I did hit 13psi in third at ~5000rpm right before separation of the intake tubing. Going to need some tubing with rolled ends and get some T-bolt clamps.

I took a short video of it idling/reving. Let me know if you want to see it and I'll figure out how to post it on youtube.

And a couple of questions for you guys:

*Anyone know anything about these ebay items (rlf BOV kit). I don't think it's the TurboXS valve though.

*What is the ideal charge pipe diameter? 2.5-3.0"?

*Has anyone tried these ebay pipe kits? Rolled ends, various bends, couplers and T-bolt clamps.

*Those with oil temp gauges and aftermarket engine oil coolers:

Where have you taken temperature readings from? Oil pan?

Should I run a parallel oil circiut from above the filter port using a 'T' fitting? One circiut to turbo and one to the oil cooler. I could tie them back in to the oil pan for return.
Or... A circiut in series, running to the cooler first, then the turbo and back to the pan.

Thanks!
-Scott.

Hey Scott, I replied to your email. I would run the oil cooler in series. I would run no less than a 3" charge pipe.

Hey, Thanks all.

So I think I'll go ahead and run to the oil cooler, then to the turbo and back.

I really don't want to tap the pan to run a sending unit in there. Maybe I could tap into the pressure feed pre-cooler?

I'll get the 3" CX pipe kit and might even try that $50 BOV

Am I the only idiot that is going to run an open dumped wastegate? Every system I see has it plumbed back into the down pipe.

Nothing wrong with an open wastegate dumping to atmosphere.

Scott, looks good!!!! Be honest... how tough was it getting the DP together on the passenger side . It was tough for me and that was on an engine stand!

Jon,

I wasn't going to say anything....BUT I brought it on myself for requesting the 3.5"DP.

Notice how the pic from underneath the DP exit is all warped out of shape??? I had that piece in a bench vice with a 3 foot pipe as leverage to squeeze that thing untill that 3.5 dia was about 1.5". I made the mistake of doing that while the V-band was unbolted from the adjoining section and ended up warping the crap out of that end too. Spent at least a day getting the flange to bolt back up to it . There is currently 0.0" of clearance to the starter. I made a little heat shield for it so it's resting on that rather than right on the starter. That pic is from me on my back under the car so the wiggle room made it lots of fun as well.

Just want to add that I'm running a Corvette starter which has different dimensions than the standard used for mockup and likely required additional tweaking to get it in.

I LOVE it now that its in!!!!!!!

Thanks again,
Scott.

Jon,

I'd like to have it together and ready to fire before the Dream Cruise, 8/16. We'll see how it all comes together.

I'm going to try out the current 24#injectors/FMU and just watch the WB.

If it ends up getting enough fuel at 9psi, then I might take it to the local track this year. If not, then I guess its 60# High Imp injectors and a SD tune.

I will keep the group informed as it comes along.

Thanks again to the community,
-Scott.

theres no way your going to be able to get 24# injectors to run 9psi, not without insanely high fuel pressure.

I am running 60# injectors and E85, and my tuner is telling me I am cutting it close at 12psi

Of course, i require more injector, but, guy on here ran out of injector running like 11psi with 42# injectors

I wouldnt attempt that man, be safe and get some nice 60+ pounders. You wouldnt want any fuel cut at all.

Jay,

Thanks man. I did get a wideband O2 sensor/gauge so I should know right away if its running lean. In 'theory' an FMU can be a good thing for a turbo engine as fuel pressure will increase with load, regardless of RPM. I know everyone frowns on them but I did make 446RWHP on the blower setup at 7psi. Will it support 9psi with a turbo? I don't know but I'll yet ya know real soon.

Edit: Ream, just to clarify, stock injectors with an FMU at 6:1. So for every psi I get 6 lbs of fuel pressure. 9psi = 38+(9*6)=92 lbs of fuel. Are the injectors locked open? Will a stock intake with a booster pump feed 550RWHP? We'll find out.

Don't worry. I'm going to be real easy on it until I'm confident.

Thanks,
Scott.
