turbo, 1.6 intake/1.5 exhaust Rockers

ok i have a modified turbo tech turbo kit on the way to my front door. i plan on installing it on a stock motor until i can get my dang dang motor built, hopefully by sometime in the summer. anyway i have a set of Crane 1.6 roller rockers collecting dust in the garage and i got an idea. since i am going to be using the stock cam for awhile with this turbo would it be wise to use the 1.6 rockers on the intake side only to simulate a bigger intake side cam? i have heard that turbo cars like to have a little more intake than exhaust lift and duration, is this true? would i be better off putting the whole set in or just leaving it all stock until i can get the motor built and stronger valve springs?

I honestly think it would run better with the 1.6's only on the intake. But for the +/- 5 hp this is worth, I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it.

I am not an authority on this subject but I will give you my 2 cents.

Detonation is caused by heat, right? So I would think you would want more lift on the exhaust side to get that heat out better. Yes, putting them on the intake would help performance, and putting them on the exhaust would help get the hot exhaust gasses out keeping cylinder temps down a little. Thus keeping detonation/knock down a little. Sound good??

I don't have much experience with forced induction though. This thought process is just what I have learned from reading up on, and tuning my Supercharged Grand Prix.

I am sure some of the more knowledgable FI guys will chime in here.

I'm not an authority either but I believe the idea behind putting the 1.5s on the exhaust side only is to increase the velocity of the exhaust gasses which helps spool the turbo.

Huh, makes sense. They are both forced induction, but my idea was based on what I know about my SC car and he is getting a turbo. I guess I was comparing apples to oranges, huh.

I am interested to see what else is said here.

I suppose it would work, but you'd definitely want 1.6I, 1.5E. The only things that would concern me is running different style rockers(aftermarket 1.6s and stamped 1.5s) and the fact that the stock cam really sucks for any kind of FI, especially turbo.

Worth a shot though, right?

Well, I've been thinking about doing something similar, 1.7 intake and 1.6 exhaust on the stock cam, since the LT4 Hot Cam is not the hot ticket for a turbo setup. I was thinking that the stock LT1 cam might be better than the Hot Cam, with less duration it should have less overlap, correct?
Just thinking out loud again!

yeah i guess what i will do is put the turbo on dyno, then the rockers on the intake side and dyno then all the rockers and dyno to see if its even worth anything. i am worried about the different style rockers though cause the 1.6's are full rollers while the factorys' are stamped. i guess we will wee unless anyone here can tell me a good reason not too.
thanks for the imput.

How could the "style" (roller versus non-roller) of one rocker arm affect the next?

It doesn't.

I wasn't to happy with the stock cam in the motor with my turbo tech kit. I would recommend picking up one of Cmotorsports turbo cams. They are only 247 bucks.

so there is a tryed and tested formula concerning turbos and LT1s? whats the overall understanding on the cam numbers?

Not a tried and true method, but I made 372 Hp and 486 ftlbs with the stock Turbo tech kit. After I rebuilt the motor and threw some more boost at it, changed the intercooler, turbo, heads and cam, I picked up 170 Hp. The stock cam has quite a bit of overlap, and isn't optimal for a turbo. It works but there is probably better performance to be found buying a mild turbo cam for the stock motor since boost levels are going to be kept low.

i didn't know if the two types or rockers would work together. not because i thought that was the way it was but because i really didn't know.
smoknz, i will look into the cam or a grind like it when i totally rebuild my motor (hopefully this summer) but for right now i am not going to dive in too deep and i figured the RR's might get me a few extra ponies for nothing but my time since i got the rockers for free!
