Those who have moved radiator/fans forward

Hey guys, I'm using one of RealQuick's front mount turbo set ups and am trying to figure out what to do about the fans/radiator. I've spent quite a bit of time searching and found some stuff from '04 but it didn't seem to help alot.

The stock fans in the stock place are not going to clear. They're not even close to clearing.

I need to know what I need to allow clearance and adequate cooling.

It's a 97 Camaro with no AC so there is plenty of room to either mount 2 pusher fans or find a way to mount a radiator vertical and forward from the stock location.
Give me some legit ideas guys and girls, I think it's my last step to making this car run.

With my PTK front mount, I kept the AC. The shop had to move the radiator forward several inches. They are actually getting the front, and making a new tray for the radiator. There should be pics of it up in the other thread later this week of how it looks.

Mike,

Joel at OFI has the 3.5" radiator that fits under the stock rad. support (so there is no cutting required).

http://www.ohioboost.com/

Email him about it and ask for some pics.

Yeah, I'm going to try to call him tomorrow. I was checking out the site looking for that radiator and I found nothing on it. However, I did notice in the pics of their LT1 turbo pics that they have 2 push fans installed with an unknown radiator. I'm wondering if I should just get a couple of strong push fans and ditch the stock pullers. I haven't read up on the pros and cons of push fans yet but I think I have room to run those and just leave the stock radiator alone.

I moved the radiator forward on Sorkelface's Z28.
It's a good amount of work, but to get AC, XL BeCool radiator, and both stock fans to clear the front mount turbo and still have the stock hood close it is 100% justified.

Pics going up soon on this thread, keep your eyes open!

Thanks, Jon, those pics are similar to what I'm planning on trying except I'm leaving the stock radiator in for now. I am going to run down to Jegs and see what they have for fans. We're going to try (2) 10" push fans and I'm hoping to flow around 3000- 4000cfm but it just depends on what I find. I just don't like the idea of the fans obstructing airflow at highway speeds.
By going this route, I don't have to cut up the radiator support or spend $700 on custom radiators.

Well, I didn't end up getting the 3000-4000 cfm I was looking for. For 10" fans, Jegs only had some 1000cfm fans, so that's 2000 cfm total and they turn at 3000 rpm. I need to learn a bit about how the stock fan wiring works because as I remember there is high speed and low speed. I would like to wire these straight up to the stock harness so I can program them to come on at certain temps through TunerCat. If anyone has info they can give me on that, please send it to me either here or at mkent93@yahoo.com.

Another thing to note is that after checking clearances and such, I decided to mount these new fans on the engine side of the radiator just like the stockers (staggered pullers). These new fans are very thin...they don't look like they can cool nearly as good as the stock fans so I am a little concerned about that. The good thing is I could add a big pusher in front of the radiator later on if these aren't strong enough. I will post pictures as I start mounting things tomorrow...right now I'm waiting on my hi-temp paint to dry on the DEI wrapped hot parts.

Don't know if this would help you, but on my SS (not supercharged, but it has a BeCool radiator and Mezeire pump that made fan clearance difficult) I enlarged the opening in my fan shroud and bolted up the fan assembly in front of the shroud instead of behind it. It took a little time with a die grinder, but I was able to save the stock fans and shrouding yet still have plenty of room.

Sounds good Mike. I thought you could get away with the stock radiator and just use thinner fans. I think it will cool just fine, but its good you have a backup plan if necessary.

Radiator support - you can see my notes on the bumper as to the final location of the hood latch point

It all fits!
Full size radiator, factory fans, and AC with just a touch to spare the factory hood will close. What you can not see is where I tucked the oil cooler and trans cooler...

Nice work, but where DID you tuck the trans cooler and oil cooler?

Nice work, but where DID you tuck the trans cooler and oil cooler?
AFT cooler is tucked under the car. A scoop / shield will be made once this setup proves its worth.
In this location it will not restict flow to the FMIC and main radiator.

Tucking the engine oil cooler int the front bumber / fender area keeps the FMIC and main radiator free of restriction as well. The 11"x11" cooler with 10" 800CFM fan controlled by the second fan relay and PCM will keep the pan warming exhaust pipes at bay. The cooler is mounted very firmly and is not goin anywere.

10AN and 1/2" NPT in and out of every part will keep the oil flow moving.
The Remote spin on filter makes oil changes easy and get the filter away from the header and Y-pipe combo of death.
The 2in 2out oil filter ports let the turbo get a nice cool direct feed from the filter via 1/2" port to 4AN line.
