Tell me why I don't want to go Turbo?

Sunday, I saw a 1.7 L Civic lay down 604/378 @ the wheels @ 28 psi. If they car would not have had some ignition issues, it would have hit I believe around 700.

I was planning on spraying a 250 shot on top of my AFR 220, stroked, 12:1, LT1 with most things that can be done to it this year and next year or two, maybe a cog t-trim setup.

Why not just go right to a killer turbo setup....

So if I wanted to build a LT1 to hit the 1000rwhp mark...I know the question has been asked before 100's of times...

But instead of throwing my combo together because I still have to buy pistons/rings/cam/fuel system....just hold off and buy the parts with a turbo setup in mind.

Would my LT1 block handle it if it was filled?
Is there enough room in the engine compartment to handle such requirements?
Compression? 8:1 I come from NA and N2O setups.
Would my AFR 220's big to big...more flow would = more power at given psi right?
Fuel system for such a car and injector requirements?
Stockish manifold work in the setup or something entirely different?
tuning? Can LT1_edit work with it on a ODB-II car or do I just go aftermarket? Speedpro, Accell?
Crank? I have a Lunati crank that is Suppossed to be good to 1200 hp?
Rods...rated @ 800 hp, so what pieces would deal with a 1000 rwhp hit?
Valves...seats...do stout turbo setups require special valves/seats?

I have a ton of questions so I thought I would start with some basics if anyone could offer assistance or guidance, I would appreciate it.

Re: Tell me why I don't want to go Turbo?

Could the stock block handle it? I'd rather put an aftermarket one in at that power level. If Filled it might, but I wouldnt risk it myself.

There is room in there, plenty for a single setup or a twin. It depends on what you want to KEEP. Like A/C, power steering etc.

8:1 or 8.5:1 should be okay with the right setup.

AFR220's I doubt would be too big, and would probably do fine with a good cam and valvetrain.

Fuel system will be pretty crazy...

Thoroughly ported/welded manifold will be needed. You could do sheetmetal though

Tuning is a whole nother ball of wax. I'd go DFI or another standalone at that level.

Crank, Rods, Pistons I dont know enough about to give you a definite answer on those in specific.

Valves and seats need to hold high heat and abuse as with any forced induction setup. Nothing too extreme though.

I'd reccomend top of the line stuff if you want 1000rwhp. Not many guys are at that level.

SleeperZ28 has I think 1003rwhp and 851rwtq

Re: Tell me why I don't want to go Turbo?

what RPM was that honda turning? I'm guessing 8500+, right? No doubt it's impressive, but HP is simply a matter of RPM and Torque. These little short stroke motors can handle some serious boost and turn some VERY high R's, thus make a good deal of HP.

But yes, you'll need to go turbo after that. It's a blast

BIG RICKs lt1 is pushing over 1200rw on a stock LT1 block..so it can be done. Im using a 383 eagle forged crank..billet rods and a good set of pistons if i can find them. I have an PT88..and i know if setup right..ill see over 900rw at 20+lbs. The block should be fine.

Do a search on the subject. His car is very impressive, and 1200rwhp is no joke. But IMHO even with block fill, 1200rwhp is a LOT of power

Yea no kidding... that 8.35 1/4 mile run was with the ~950rwhp "low boost" tune. They didn't run with the 1200rwhp tune since someone apparently screwed with the car and messed up the turbo while sitting at HPE. At least that's what i've heard. With around 250rwhp more i'm sure mid-high 7s will be no problem next season. If you've watched the video, the tires were screaming fer mercy for about the first 300 feet or so. So traction issues will probably plague them when they turn it up to max.

Man i hope the LT1 beats the LSX engines to the 7s first.

Re: Tell me why I don't want to go Turbo?

yep

As far as the civic, i still think the most impressive turbo setup is Ken Duttweiler's 4.5L stroked buick V6 [side note: it's really a buick stage 2 block copy made by Olds, but doesn't have the deep skirt (similar to a SBC) like the buick version... very few made and just as strong as the buick S2]. It ran high 6's at over 200mph. Not bad for a little V6 pushing 35psi boost from twin T-70s. He hinted it would make over 1500rwhp on a dyno, but never revealed the true specs.

Re: Tell me why I don't want to go Turbo?

That was also the first time they had the car making full hits on the the new set up, all time before were just for the NHRA license. Also the slicks it was on at Thunder on that 8.35 pass were old, thet fresh slicks on it sunday before the turbo and trans went. Gotta remmeber that car will go over 170, that 168 was a 91.5mm running out of gear, it has a 106 on it now. They are in process of getting it ready, I wanna see it take on Ronnie Dukes blower car

Turbo's and trannys don't like each other. Trying to build boost out of the gate creates a lot of heat.

For the record about cyliner heads, that engine was using AFR 220's that CC'd exactly 220 cc's. They were not big at all.

Re: Tell me why I don't want to go Turbo?

If I wasn't so broke I'd already be in the 7's It's not cheap to go fast. I'm putting my motor that broke back together for a back up motor, that's the plan if I can find money somewhere. The motor I was originally building as a back up is what will probably be in the car next, same setup 398 LT1 but with 215RR heads. Pretty much everything will be the exact same between the two motors but the heads. I know I can make the LT1 live with 1300+ RWHP and I plan to get the LT1 back on top and keep it there.

Donations for the 7 sec LT1 fund will be gladly accepted
