Re: Smoke under boost

confirming weak rings are just doing a compression test to be sure right? I have a tester, you just remove the spark plug, and shut off fuel and turn the key over? just want to make sure I get the right result by testing right. Also what causes my oil to seem to get "used" so quickly, gets very black after hundreds of miles not thousands

That's pretty much how the test goes. Add in some bloody knuckles and swearing for good measure.

Does the oil smell like gas?

Kevin,

This can actually occur by the following method:

It doesnt actually occur while in boost, but rather the instant you left off the gas (and PCV starts sucking crankcase vapors again which became high from blow-by when you were in boost)

I know the OP mentions specifically 'in-boost', but I wanted to play out this other scenario.

I actually added a 'catch-can' to my PCV valve (like all the LSx guys do) just to keep the heads / pistons clean.

It does catch a little bit of oil during part-throttle or just-off-the-boost operation.

First of all, you guys need to fix your engines. Then you need to vent them correctly. And the pistons & heads will stay real clean with water injection... so you don't need to worry about that.

Re: Smoke under boost

My app... 97ss 383 with D1 Procharger MM6 trans and lots of mods and forged assembly.

I too had black dirty oil. Very soon after an oil change. I tried all the open breathers, and, pvc suction routes thru catch cans and thru the blower intake. Not much worked. Lots of oil made the intake dirty and the MAF fail.

Then I did a crankcase driven Vac pump. This worked. I don't think the Gen 2 Chev small block is designed for FI apps.

After the Vac mod (I run this on the street) I also had much better performance, which, I think is a result from better ring pack seal and increased cylinder pressure.

Now it runs better than ever. Also run the poly_glycol mod, which helped alot. I made the jump to a Gen_1 single plane mod. Quite an improvement over the LT1 Log manf.

So, now I am modding to an F1A. B.

Not bored. Just skilled. Exactly why I do not like to answer Q's here. I think this will be the end.

I think that comment was made in jest and not meant in a malicious manner.

Yes, it was I was just kidding

This poor thread originated in 2006 and the last reply was by me in August. Unfortunately, this forum has been really slow except for Dave and a couple others.

FWIW, I think the vacuum pump system you (mzgp5x) built is a very good one, but not the only solution for venting an engine. I know you worked hard on it and respect what you've done. Sorry you were offended.
