Serious question about STS Turbo.

I know this may sound dumb to most, but if it comes between asking a stupid question and dying, i choose stupid question. Being the turbo is mounted in the rear near the gas tank from what i heared, and there is only the heat shield protecting the gas tank, is there anything that can go wrong with turbo heating up the gas and the car would explode with me in it? I mean if hypethetically you get gas dripping down onto the hot turbo, will that start a fire or explosion?
Even if they is nothing wrong with the gas tank and just the fact that the turbo is near the gas tank, will anything or could anything happen bad?
Appreciate the help.

In general, putting incredibly hot things near fuel isnt a good idea.

Re: Serious question about STS Turbo.

Thanks for the info. I just wanted to know for piece of mind. I am know headed to buy the system and have the guys at cartek in NJ work on my car. They got a 9 sec vette with the system. Lets see what they can do for me. I appreciate the help.

By the way, What did you mean by "In general, putting incredibly hot things near fuel isnt a good idea." 5.0 this ? Did you mean that response towards the sts system or just in general speaking. What do you think of the system altogether?

I meant what I said. Anytime you put something that hot near fuel, it can be a potential fire hazard. I think the setup is junk.

Re: Serious question about STS Turbo.

There is the infamous 5.0THIS, I knew we wouldn't get along for long!!

Last I heard, it takes a spark to ignite fuel, and also last I checked there is usually a thing called a muffler back there...which gets hot too by the way. If you ask a general question about the STS kit, you are going to get a wide variety of answers, ranging from people that love their kit (me), and people that hate them for some reason (5.0THIS). My suggestion is take the opinions from people that own one, and not people that discuss hypotheticals and theories. Good luck.

Fuel will ignite if it gets hot enough w/o a spark.

Re: Serious question about STS Turbo.

Ever see fuel hit a hot header and ignite? Happens in NASCAR all the time, especially with the GM motors as the fuel pump sits right next to the passenger header.

And.. I didnt offer up my opinion on the kit, someone asked me what my opinion was, and I answered.

I've never heard of that, not saying it isn't true, I've just never heard it. I wonder what kind of temps it would take though. The turbo on this setup, I would assume, wouldn't get much hotter than a muffler. So, I wouldn't think this would be a concern.

Re: Serious question about STS Turbo.

Well On The Turbo Getting Hot,,,yes It Will Get Hot,,,not A Whole Hell Of Alot Hotter Than A Muffler,,, Exhaust Passes Through The Muffler Just As It Does The Turbo....the Air Outside Passing Across Both Of These Cools Them To An Extent... So Either Way With The Turbo It Might Get A Little Hotter,,, But Not Enough To Cause Concern,,, I Just Still Get Concerned About The Air Filter Being Back There, Mixed Emotions I Guess

Re: Serious question about STS Turbo.

here is some basic info http://www.ci.phoenix.az.us/FIRE/fla...tml#BACKGROUND
"Gasoline will ignite when a heat source or electrical spark of at least 853 degrees comes in contact with it."
(data sheets from the gas companys here in sweden says ignitiontemp >500F)
But if it just a "drop" leak it aint gonna do any damage beacuse there is no way the flame could get in to the tank...
Infact you can try to light a match in a gastank whitout any hazard, the A/F is way to rich to burn.
But dont try to trow a match in there, on its way it will pass the area were the mixture is explosive and you gonna get a god blowout

EDIT: data sheet http://zenstoves.net/MSDS/Gasoline.pdf

Not 100% correct. The Autoignition Temperature of a standard unleaded gasoline can be anywhere from 260 to 460 degrees C (or 500 to 860 deg F).

Check MSDS for gasoline autoignition or any compound.
