Which retard/ignition box for Boost?

I'm thinking about selling my delteq and going back to the conventional oem/opti ignition. I put my delteq ignition back to stock yesterday and have noticed no difference in power or driveability. Just wanted to see what kind of successes you all have had with different ignition boxes. Do I need an aftermarket box at all?

Yes, I've been looking at MSD BTM and Crane Hi-6. I'm not even sure if I need a boost retard since my stock pcm seems to be doing a good job.

Yes, you definatly need a box. Its retarding it because its picking up detonation from the knock sensor, or false knock.

Run 100 Octane through it, and see if it still retards the timing. If it doesnt, your getting real knock and could damage your engine.

And personally, Id run a Mallory 685. Its easy to wire up, and can be run with an optional MAP sensor to pull X degrees of timing per pound of boost, adjustable to tenths of a degree. Pretty slick. And it functions as a window switch if you decided to run some juice on that thing too. Also can function as a two step.

I don't have knock retard. But thanks for the tip on the Mallory box. I didn't know it would boost retard.

Crane HI-6R here as I ditched the Delteq too. Only thing w/ Mallory it seems is that their boxes fail a lot. Get a HI-6 not the R. The R is a pain to wire up and get to work for whatever reason.

Thanks for the reply. I'm definitely leaning toward the Crane Hi-6 due to the reliability problem with the Mallory 685.

Here is another question: My last opti lasted for 130,000 miles and was still going strong. I wonder if I put one of these Hi-6 boxes on my car if it will decrease the lifespan of my new gm optispark?

What about the MSD Digital 6? Worked fine for me. And, coincidently, I have a near new one for sale with MSD coil. Before the MSD I had two Crane Hi 6 boxes. 1st one lasted about a month in the engine comparment. Moved it inside the car and it lasted a few years.

I had an Accel 300+ for 10 yrs straight on the original opti. 70K on that engine before it let go due to hydro lock. Tore the opti apart and it was in near perfect condition.

That sounds good. I've never once had a problem with my vented opti. My first opti I thought was going bad but it turned out to be the plug wires. I bought a new one when I installed the new engine but didn't need to.

Yeah, dat be me. I was just to change my name but I never got a response back from the mods so I just finally said the hell w/ it and made the switch...since this is the only place I haven't used it.

I wasn't trying to be sneaky...honest. I wish I could get my post count transfered over but oh well.

As far as the ignition box I figured out why mine didn't work....because it didn't work! I sent it back for repairs and they claimed the box was fine but it was blinking all error codes. Put it back in today and man the throttle response is 50% stronger than just using the crane coil alone. I know some say CD boxes don't do anything but it sure did on mine. Idle I'm running 32* of timing and it felt sluggish but w/ the box it is totally different. May have to back off the timing some but I'm reading no knock of any kind from the MSD knock alert.
