rebuild for turbo opinions?

Well i finally have everything i need to install my turbotech kit, but i am afriad that with my miles (118K) that it won't last, so i thinking about a rebuild (on a budget funds are very low) and i want some feedback, because you all have the experience i lack. Plan is to use stock bottom end with some speed pro -10.9cc pistons, whatever rings you all suggest, new bearings, home P&P on stock heads and intake. my questions are, with that compression what kinda boost can i run, are rods worth saving a little more to be safe, injector size, or anything else i haven't thought about????? i appreciate the input i dk what i would do if i couldn't read and learn from all these people online.

I do not know your HP expectations, but it sounds like you are off to a good start. Although I mainly build turbo systems, I did custom build a SC system for my wifes Z so I know this combo works. 10 to 12 LB boost @ most with ft mount intercooler, 42LB injectors, 21cc dish pistons, stock rods and crank, mild port work, blow through MAF. With a good tune this combo is good for better then mid 11's and she gets about 21 MPG. If you what to go a step futher, get a custom SC cam from Combination Motorsports. Put studs in the mains and heads and use felpros 1170 head gaskets and you are ready to have fun.

Thanks for the input, i have been doing some research and i think i am changing my mind though, i might just throw the kit on the stock motor with a good water/alchy injection kit and be easy on it (well kinda) and hope it lasts. What size injectors do those of you running turbos on stock motors use and who do you suggest to do the tuning? any other suggestions to get a little more life or power out of the stock setup??

If you choose to go with the stock lower end and pistons, then be sure to get a good tune or use a boost retard of some sort. However, I can promise you will join the blower motor rebuild club very soon if you choose not to use and intercooler of some kind. The water injection will help some, but will help alot if used in conjuction with an intercooler which the turbotech kit should include. I have seen stock motors last two or more years if not hammered on every day, however, there was a guy a few weeks ago (on this forum) who got 3 whole days with his stock combo before it let go. So it is up to you. I would sugest you try to stay under 8# of boost if you can. Have fun and be ready for emergency build up.

ya i have the turbo tech intercooler, and i only plan on about 6psi so i hope to get at least a few months out of it. In the mean time i will be picking up a block and starting a build so when it finally does go i will hopefully have something in the works to minimize downtime. Any suggestions on injectors?

You said you have 118k that is something to worry about with a tubro. I would buy the parts any ways if your just going to put it on. You will need them. It kind of makes sense to do everything all at once though does it? Pistons, rings, bearings, are a must. You can find rods for $300 too. The stock crank falls out way after the rods. You need some sort of power goal for all the smart dudes to give you advice on the actual parts

I agree with Rival, 118 K miles is alot and Stock rods will go before the crank. As far as injectors, Rival is right again. We must know your future HP goals before the appropriate combination can bet picked. When I go to build a custom turbo system, for an aerobatic plane or automotive use, I need to know the end goals. In the aviation world we do not use FMU's in the same way the automotive world does. However, If you want to use an FMU, 36 - 42# injectors will be very flexable. But if you want to go off of a programed factory PCM without FMU, you realy need to develop some sort of ideal of your end HP goals.

Also, you might take into consideration the use of an aftermarket fuel computer if your HP goals start to surpass 550-600 rwhp. Turbos can be dificult to dial in. I am using a DFI right now and it has given me endless posibilities.

Once you decide how much you want to spend, and have HP goals in mind, there are many on this forum who will be able to guide you along.

right now i am looking for about 400hp at the wheels. I totally agree with you rival that is why i was thinking about putting the turbo on now, and building a short block on the side. If i blow a ring or something then hopefully i will have the short block done and be able to install that. I know i am not going to get alot of miles out of the stock engine, but i was hoping to be conservative and in conjuction with moderate boost and the alchy/water injection get at least a few months out of it. Fact is that having this turbo sitting in my room is killing me, but i welcome any suggestions. As far as injectors go i am willing to buy what i need now and down the road get larger ones, but if i can get away with 42lb'ers for both i am all for it. Finally, i wasn't sure if anyone ran a seperate Air/Fuel computer with our cars, but i previously owned a DSM so i know a decent amount about that kind of tuning, if you have any information on that kind of set up please do share.

I'm currently running the turbotech kit with 60-1hifi making 5lbs of boost. The motor info is: 383 9:1CR, AFR 190 heads, XE224/236/114 cam, 42lb delphi/lucas injectors, blow thru maf. I'm running the stock timing, and fuel tables. I've changed the injector constant to reflect the new injectors, cylinder size, and bumped up the idle but that's it. I don't spin it over 3500, because of this. The PCM is able to compensate for the added airflow and the AFR is fine in closed loop. I want to adjust the timing, and fuel before I start going WOT. Hope this helps you out.

Dude, its just not right let your turbo set around and not use it. I think that is in the constitution some where. But serious, 42 # injectors will work with over 400 rwhp (by the math anyway) so you should be ok.

Again, I agree with Rival, if you have it apart do all you can afford to make the engine bomb proof. Also keep in mind that you are running a turbo. If you blow a piston, and in the unlikely case parts come out the exhaust, the exhaust wheel spining @ 50,000 RPM. Compare this to a wrench going into the intake of a Pratt & Whiteny j85 or f100 turbine @ military power. However this is unlikely, but?????

If I have a tubro kit in my room I would have problems too. So if it is KILLING you and I mean it, throw it on. Buy some eagle h-beam rods for 300 and SRP or JE forged pistons for 500. That way you will be good to 500rwhp at least. I can tell you that you will not stop at 400rwhp because whatever you drive you get used to. Tune it conservtive and keep high octane gas in it(94up) and the boost at 5psi. Pull lots of timing and drive it nice. When you blow it up you will start your rebuild. Good luck.

You will never hit 400 Rwhp with only 5 psi on the stock engine with the turbo tech kit. I made 372 Hp and 486 RWTQ with about 8 psi and the stock injectors with a great air fuel curve. If ya plan on putting the kit on a built motor later you will want bigger injectors however. Get the largest you can, thru programming you can tune to never know they are there. I swapped in 42#ers into my car from the stock 24's. I changed the injector constant and also the injector offset vs. voltage table to the manufacturers specs and went to drive the car and it drove no different than it did with the stock injectors.

i was hoping you would chime in SMOKNZ, in know 400 rwhp is gonna be out of my league, aspirations don't always equal reality. However i would be interested to know a little more about your old setup, who did your tuning, what did you use for a blow off valve, any other mods, ect.

Buy 42lb injectors sorry not mentioning that in previous post. The tuning you are going to need is def. dyno. You need to have everything perfact.
