Quick Question about Procharger + Stock LT1

A friend IM'd me today telling me I "need" an ATI procharger P600B that is 9-12psi intercooled. I told him that a setup like that would blow a stock LT1 engine easily, as 6PSI is the limit. He then got all in my face about how i'm chicken to do it...which isn't the case..I just don't have the interest or the money in doing something like that.

I was just looking for verification that 6PSI is the limit...and even though it's intercooled it doesn't mean that you can just boost the PSI. I figured I'd ask you guys as you guys are the expert opinions that would help settle this dispute? Thanks.

I don't know if you can really say there is a "limit" or a magic number with stock internals. She can give up the ghost at 4psi or you can run for 30K on 8.

All really a matter of time and more importantly a matter of tune.

Re: Quick Question about Procharger + Stock LT1

I personally think 6 is the safe limit on a stock LT1 if set up right and strictly maintain all the parameters and use good fuel.. and yes 9-12 is too much for a stock LT1 Even if its intercooled. I run 8 psi after the intercooler and dyno @ 610hp. The engine is built for it though and when it was stock. 6 was the limit. A guy I talked to had 6psi w/ a D1SC and it only lasted 1000km (630 miles.) and the engine was toast. His engine is now 8.9:1 compression on 7 psi and living fine. 10.5:1 is just too much to play with boost. IMO. I know there are guys that say they make it work. But dont play with it if you dont want a rebuild. Sooner rather than later.

Sounds like a nice friend...

In my opinion, if the motor isn't built for it, don't do it. It's not about being chicken. It's about not blowing your prefectly good high-compression motor up. Lower the compression, throw some forged slugs in there, THEN start forcing air into the motor.

exactly. I just don't have money to burn. All the money I have is hard-earned, and I have other goals in life other than shoving my car into the 11's. I enjoy my car, and I want to keep it as long as I can...but projecting it up is something for me to do later in life. Thanks for the replies guys.

Re: Quick Question about Procharger + Stock LT1

First thing is if you have a lot of miles on the motor, stay away from forced induction, otherwise yes you can run 6 psi on a stock motor as long as it is tuned for it.I have tuned many stock LT1 and LS1 with no problems and the cars are daily drivers. Some are going on two years now, same with nitrous. As long as you have a good tune and not get aggressive that is fine also...
