Purchase ATI oil seal?

I have a friend with a D1 kit - it has gone back twice for service (leaking oil seal on mainshaft), and there have been "issues" both times.

This time we decided to take it apart and check it out ourselves - pulled everything out - the oil seal is basically a timing chain cover type seal - and is trashed. The outer bearing's outer race was cracked, and we think this may have been causing the problems we observed.

The bearings had numbers on them, and they cross-referenced to an ABEC-1 bearing? Also the outer race which was cracked seems to be a phenolic type material - it was *very* brittle. We went ahead and ordered some ABEC-3 bearings - the outer one is easy to replace by the others you have to press off the impeller/mainshaft, and we are not sure if we want to do that. The ABEC-3 we picked up also was rated for a higher lateral load than the ABEC-1 that was in the blower - so it seems strange they weren't used from the start?

But the main oil seal needs to be replaced, and ATI refuses to sell us the part - telling us the blower is not user servicable - even though they have made it clear there is no warranty, etc. on it.

Anyone have any idea where we can pick up the oil seal, or a manufacturer we could call and talk to?

Thanks,
Chris Bennight

As you found out, ATI will not sell internal components. The seal is most likely made by CR (Chicago Rawhide). Did you get a number off the old seal? I was able to order a front seal from a NAPA dealer.

The seal is a non-standard size and is proprietary to ATI and some transmission company. I think you might be able to buy the seal if you can figure out which transmission it goes into and ordering it that way...just a thought!

Thank you very much - we will try that today. Hopefully we can cross-reference something. FWIW the seal is marked as "USA 40-47-7"

When I replace my seal and o-ring for my Vortech, I went to a industrial hydraulic pump place and just walked in with the "camshaft type" seal and the O-ring. He just measured it out and ordered me two new ones since the one he has was a couple of micron off. The new ones looked tremendously better than the old one and has been working great for over half a year. I was lucky to find the place after checking a bunch of places through the internet and now no more oil leak. Vortech wanted $350.

You can try something like that. It all cost me about $12. The measurement you have is probably the outside diameter, inside diameter and the thickness of the seal.
