P600B gave up.....turbo?

Just smoked my P600B.

6,500 @ 8 psi. Impeller contacted the housing. Car was doing great, beating my buddies blown stang while screwing around by Road America.

I think the next step is a turbo system. I want to keep the A/C, what kind of down pipe can I fit into the car with the A/C still installed?

Also, will I have to modify the radiator, or can I leave it in its stock position?

Thanks for the help,
Shane

really, its probably best to stand the radiator up. Gives you SO much more room to work with

You could run a stock manifold on the passenger side and make a log for the drivers side that keeps the radiator in the stock position and fit a 3" down pipe.

I was hoping to leave it for cosmetic purposes. I like the way the stock shroud looks, but I can get a stainless one made if the radiator has to be straightened up. The less modifying I do, the faster the car is back on the road.

I think "RealQuick" is taking a sabbatical while he sorts things out in his life but I and several others are using his log manifold kit. This Log Manifold configuration keeps the A/C and everything else (except the Air Pump and ABS block) and allows the use of the stock radiator position although you may have to do like I did and switch to a thin fan on the drivers side.

Mine just came together this past week and is a total blast to drive. I'm running the TurboSmart 14psi springs. It gets 10psi just playing around below 4500RPM now. I'm still feeling it out and watching gauges, reading plugs but I'm sure it will make the 14 psi.

If your looking to make something yourself, then you would probably be able to keep everything. You should be able to run a 3" downpipe no problem. I have a 3" downpipe down both sides with my twins. When I had my single kit with A/C I did have a 3.5" down the drivers side, you just need to get creative with your bends to snake it thru the steering shaft. It would have probable flowed better with a straighter 3" pipe though.

Glad to hear that.

I will be buying the header pipe and doing the rest myself. I currently have LT's Y'ed into single 4", I would like to have atleast a 3" down pipe, if not a 3.5" or 4". (I figured 4" was out of the question unless I lose the A/C)

I want to see how much abuse the stock bottom end can handle.

Not much... Mine lasted a year and a half running 8 psi, but eventually gave up. I changed out the pistons and and ran it another year and a half up to 18 psi on stock crank and rods, and it probably would have lasted longer. I rebuilt it again because it was lifting the heads, not because anything broke, I forged the bottom end. The head lifting had more to do with the kit I was running too. You from the Sheboygan area? I saw something about messing around by Road America?

I will be running a 7 lb spring and I have a spare engine waitng for a nice 355 rebuild. Depending on how much I spend on the turbo setup, I might be able to rebuild it this winter. (I have too many projects right now)

I live in Watertown, WI. One of my good buddies lives in Howards Groove, about 5 minutes from RA. We go up for all the race events. We were up there for Vintage weekend, and I'll be back 8/8/08 for American Le Mans Series. (I also head up there to visit as well.)

Looks like you are only a few minutes away from Sheboygan. Do you work at Kohler?

I'm building a new setup based on BBK shorty headers. Goal is keep it cheap and keep everything except abs and smog. So far cost for hot parts is BBK shorties, two 3" ubends, 3" vband clamp, T-4 flange, one 3.5" ubend, one 3.5" collector flange. about $500 +/- for hot parts alone. This is with a dumped exhaust at the downpipe of course.

I already had the turbo, wastegaet and BOV. the "hotparts" are fairly cheap considering 75% is in the BBK shorty setup.

SMR,

That looks great. That is what I will be fabbing up in the next few months. Not sure what exact turbo, but I have piping and flanges on the way. I also have a wastegate ordered.

What size piping is your downpipe?

It appears to route from the pass side, to the front of the motor, then up to the driver's side acroos the fornt of the motor. perhaps the pipe runs under the pass. side motor mount? Thats how I did my header kits.
