Need Intercooler
Let me also add, I have tried to pick parts that I felt would be make big power and be reliable. So I am running very big headers, I am running a 28000 GVW trans cooler with big fittings, I am running parts that we thought would support 800 flywheel hp.
I'm making 900 flywheel now if you figure 15-20% loss for my T400 unlocked.

Will do... thanks for the info.
Chris B.. Do you have any pics of your intercooler mounted?
I really don't want to hack my car up a whole lot....at least not at this point in time. I know that is hard to do with a big intercooler and our limited space on these cars.
PSJ... I think I can fit an intercooler similar to yours (same core size) but if the driver side inlet/outlet was at the bottom... so in other words the intercooler was symmetrical looking at it from the front. I wonder if that will hurt it's efficiency? Would it force more of the air through the bottom?
Thanks guys,
-Jarrod

I would check with Jburns@griffinrad.com for tech questions like that, please post his response he is very responsive to his emails.

This was dealing with "Jimmy" over there I believe (but I am horrible with names). Turnaround was *very* fast and was very professional.

I approved it and it then went to "costing". That took forever. 3-4 weeks. It was pretty ridiculous. The price I finally got back was more than 250 higher for a comparable spearco, without any type of special pricing from spearco. And there is still the whole bar/plate vs. tube/fin argument. From the time the order was placed with spearco to the time I received the intercooler was less than it took griffin to "cost" my order. Jimmy was absolutely great, a good guy to work with, etc. If the rest of the company had been like that I may have ended up with a griffin (hadn't checked spearco pricing yet, just assumed it would be higher).
But I am very happy so far with the spearco unit. I have some map sensors and temp sensors to plumb before and after the unit so I can get some idea of performance - pressure drop and temp drop would be the best indication of how well it performs. If you get a chance that data would definitely be interesting PSJ?

Chris have you installed your intercooler yet? Any readings on IATs and pressure drop? Thanks in advance

And Chris, the Griffin stuff can cost anywhere from $650 to 950 depending on size and whether you can get in a GP. When I talked to Spearco I was quoted $1050.
To me, an intercooler needs to justify it's existence. Being able to run as much timing as I am on less than 110 gas, make 17 lbs of boost and 719rwhp (746 unsafe) thru a T400 - Well I like my Griffin.
Might want to check with www.ls1speed.com if they would be willing to do a GP.

And again, in your situation with the prices your mentioned I may have gone the other way - but the fact was griffin quoted me I believe 940 + shipping, Spearco's one off price was about 750 shipped. I let griffin know they were way out of line with the price I was quoted, but no response. The coupled with the fact that spearco has a definite name in the business - well, I think in my position the choice was obvious.
Note that on the pricing psj your intercooler is larger but also a 4" core (vs. 3.5) which would account for at minimum a decent price difference.
Mousetrap - nope, intercooler mounting and fabing isn't done yet - it goes slowly as the car is my daily driver, and I am working @ Texas A&M as well as finishing up my masters - so not too much free time! Intercooler is actually just about identical to LJ's - see
http://para.noid.org/~lj/1000hp/1000hppage4.htm
and I am going to mimic most of his setup, but with 3" piping on the discharge side.
I can get some air temps from Jordon from the same core intercoolers, etc. when he gets back from egypt. That said your temp over ambient is going to depend heavily on the discharge temp of the blower also. A big blower making low-mid boost is going to have much lower discharge temps than a small blower making high boost. As I mentioned mine is already plumbed for map sensors and thermistors before and after (have it hooked up to a little dataQ logger) - since I think the pressure and temp drop across the intercooler is the best example of what it is capable of. But I can find the other data to. My setup is still a few months to completion.
And I still don't think the bar/plate vs. tube/fin has ever really been hashed out

Chris
I got quoted $1050 from Spearco directly and from one of their import dealers.
I think the Griffins are selling for $800 right now.
Let us know what your inlet air temps do on the dyno... no flames from me... I took a chance and the temps are low... I'd like to see comparable numbers from a Spearco air/air.

Adding a Voretch Intercooler and or Custom?
Guys,
I have an S-Trim on a 383 motor and I will be rebuilding this year. I am toying with the idea of adding an Intercooler. Not sure if I should go with the expensive Vortech (new or used) or possiblity this unit from Jordon? I am looking for feedback on what the best route to take is regarding adding an Intercooler? Trying to understand total cost, improvement in HP and also the best place to install the intercooler. Ovbiously the less restrictions one has with the piping the better the air flow.
Thank in advance!
