Need help ASAP - balancer issue with Vortech

I bought a Vortech SQ trim from Jason Short but didn't get the balancer. Not sure if Jason didn't realize that the balancer is specific to the kit or what - that's not the issue, i've already called him on that. No biggie.

What I want to know is - if Jason has sold the car or something - can I use the stock balancer with this kit or can I purchase an aftermarket kit to use?

Vortech wants $400 for a pulley/balancer assembly - will not seperate the unit so i'm kinda screwed there.

It would be financially more sound to purchase an aftermarket balancer or re-use the stock one - if Jason no longer has the balancer.

Ugghh - I feel sick

All Vortech does is take a stock balancer and machine the inside a bit so that the crank pulley sits flush on there. Just take your stock balancer to a good machine shop and tell them to machine it to where it sits flush on the balancer...it's not hard, I did it myself...

Good luck, Vortechs are AWESOME.....you will love it!

Re: Need help ASAP - balancer issue with Vortech

Found a local machine shop to machine the balancer. Have to wait until Monday to drop it off. Oh well, just mocking things up now anyhow. May need to purchase some flex tubing for an inlet tube - until I can fab up a solid intake tube.

What is a reasonable price for this machining - doesn't seem like much to me, hitting it on a lathe for 5 minutes looks like it will do it.

Thanks for the help guys

Shouldn't cost much at all...didn't take very long, maybe a few minutes of measuring and getting it set up and another couple of minutes to cut it and make sure it was gonna work...

When you get the machine work done remember to have the harmonic balancer hub keyed. You will then also need to put a key in the crank. This will save you a major headace down the road. I learned that one first hand. Mine spun and chewed the crap out of the hub. I got luckey and it did not destroy the crank.

The front of the balancer is a cast surface that is not smooth, or true to the crank centerline. Vortech machines them smooth so the pulley has a nice, true surface to seat against. Also, the countersink around the bolt holes would cause alot of stress in the S/C drive pulley and will crack.
