to much boost? head gaskets went..
to much boost? head gaskets went..
last summer i had put the motor back together and i used felpro 1074 gaskets for my 1994 z28 with a s-trim. i should be seeing 6-8psi on this car. it has vortechs 3.125 pulley the size under the stock one and i have a brad brand intake.
car has been done for months cause of bad idle problems and i replaced abunch of stuff that didn't need replaced. then i found someone with a scanner a buddy of me got one and we were reving the car to try to keep it at a steady rpm since it was stalling out. then white smoke and we knew!! funny how i drove it for about a month after the dyno and i had no problems, but for 8months the car sat and wasn't started,so maybe dry rot?
do i need better head gaskets?

Re: to much boost? head gaskets went..
I have heard of issues on Forced Induction cars with the Intake gaskets going bad, but not Head Gaskets.
I know several people (including myself) have used 3M adheasive to their intake gaskets to ensure a good lasting seal. I don't know if this could also be used on the head gaskets.
I believe I have the same head gaskets on my 95, and I have been running 15#'s of boost on a D1SC with no problems (as far as the head gaskets go), so that makes me believe your problem is elsewhere.

Re: to much boost? head gaskets went..
so you think the felpro intake gaskets i used could be the problem and not the heads?
antifreeze was dumping out the exhaust though..
how the heck would i beable to tell if the intake gaskets were the problem and not the heads?? oil was full of antifreeze!
man- replaced my new opti thinking it was the problem and it wasn't. replaced new map sensor too... i just hope my brand new plugs and o2sensors aren't junk from acouple mins of trying to scan the car.
anyone need a opti? mine has 1000miles on it and worked perfect.

Re: to much boost? head gaskets went..
Also acouple months ago i pulled the intake to port it for a throttlebody. so maybe you arew right that the ntake is the issue? stock felpro intake gaskets not good enough>?
it could be as simple as the head bolts are leaking. that is what happened on my stock motor. What did you use to sell the head bolts with? did you reuse the stock head bolts or did you replace them?
Re: to much boost? head gaskets went..
No coolant in the intake so that's not the source of your white smoke. Sounds like head gasket(s). IMO head gasket failures are usually the symptom, not the root cause of your problem. Detonation (ping/knock) is probably what made the head gaskets go.
Re: to much boost? head gaskets went..
i used ARP head bolts. hmm the car sat for 8 months and i changed the oil and fired it up a month ago and one or two rockers/lifters was tapping and it wouldn't pump up.. car did backfire like twice on me and i have heard that can kill the head gaskets.
guys do i need better head gasket then the felpro 1074's for my setup?
a friend has a 97 z28 with nos and he caught backfire/detonnation and it took out his brand new head gaskets. sounds like my issue.
can my plugs and 02 sensors be cleaned and saved?

Re: to much boost? head gaskets went..
two years ago at 140mph my water pump went out and by the time i got the car stopped it had over heated. i had a machine shop fix the heads cause they were warped. so the heads are fine, the car spent a hr on the dyno with them beating it and with a bad fuel pump and fouled plugs i pulled 400rwhp.
like i asked before - are these head gaskets good enough or do i need something better?

Not the best thing for head gaskets there. I have had good luck with Cometics but, lots of people run the Felpros with a lot more boost than you without any issues. Need to fix the detonation problem it sounds like.

Re: to much boost? head gaskets went..
ah i was just going to ask if i needed head studs. i think thats the problem in general. car has a good tune on it, i had mixed up some plug wires on my delteq and it back fired while i was scanning it and found a bad tps sensor so that might have took what last leg my head gaskets had after the dyno time.
