More Boost!!!!

Currantly running 8psi. have an 11psi pulley But told it is too much for the compression i have. So here it goes. 383 Forged, 10.03 to 1, cc305 cam, 60psi motron injectors, 255 inline pump, Going to switch to dual pumps intank. also a/f ratio is at 11.6 to 1. But pump is maxed out right now this will change when i switch to dual pumps. I run two gallons of 100 to 6-8 gallons of 93 as a safety but not neccesary. What would it take to run the 11psi pulley safely. What changes could be made to keep it from detonating...joe

P.S. AFR makes a nice head w/76cc But not looking to spend $4000. to go to 11psi of boost (heads $2500., install $800.- $1000., Pumps $650.00)

Which head unit are you running? What size/brand intercooler?

Do the install yourself (save 800-1000) and you need a new price quote on those heads.. $2500 is a high price.. I would say you could get AFRs for under $2000 from the right reseller..

As far as everything else is concerned.. obvisously, if you get the larger cc'd heads, your compression ratio will drop and you can safely run a bit more boost. Get yourself a good tune or an MSD BTM and retard the timing a lot more. People have run +12#'s of boost on the stock motor w/o it blowing up, but, they run a VERY safe tune..

Check with Dave @ Tenacious .. www.tenperf.com for a good price on heads..

He'll have some good advice for you too..

Re: More Boost!!!!

Your CR is too high to run more boost on pump gas.

Re: More Boost!!!!

Alcohol/water injection would likely do it. I ran a true 9.7:1 and 15 psi on 91 octane; no intercooler. It did have ceramic barrier coating on the pistons and a water injection setup.

Josh-'97 WS6- Blower is a D1SC w/twins

Sean94Z- Sean the heads I want are AFR W/100% CNC Comp Port. I Believe that the better following heads will make more power at a givin RPM even under boost. But the questions is "how much h/p can i gain" The heads I have now flow 276 @ 550 & 176 @ 550. So again For $4000.+ dollars. What is the gain in h/p for just switching the heads. 10-20 + 3-4psi of boost. Also not patient enough to do the work myself ( Not smart enough too.)

rskrause- Do you not agee 3- 4psi + 10-20 for heads total = 60-80 RWHP for $4000.00 dollars There must be another way. Head Gskts thickness?? What About running 100 octane 100% or maybe 50%?????

camcojb- Alcohol / Water Injection . Want to Keep it Simple (K.I.S.S.) Makes me feel like I'm driving a race car. Too Exotic for me.

Thanks to all of you for replying. Please respond back if any other idea's come to your heads............................................J oe

Exotic? It's a $300-$400 kit that allows you to run a few more pounds of boost and more timing. Maybe a 90 minute install if you take your time. No maintenance other than filling the reservoir every once in a while; mine last 2-4 tanks of gas or more. Heck of a lot easier and cheaper than swapping heads!

Just trying to come up with SIMPLE and inexpensive solutions.

Re: More Boost!!!!

Jody-I'm sorry if you feel I slammed Your Idea. I don't know why but Acohol/water injection gives me the creeps. When I started this project I had some limitations . No NOS. No Boost Retard Box. NO converter for injectors. Stock ECM ETC. ETC. Every Body is different/Strange.........Any other thoughts I'd be glad to listen..............Joe

P.S. Thanks for replying Jody

Re: More Boost!!!!

Joe,

No big deal, really. I've just had so much luck with it. The Buick Grand National and Syclone/Typhoon guys live by the stuff. I had it on my 16 psi 9.44:1 ProCharged 540, 16 psi 468 with 9.7:1 compression, my buddys 14 psi ProCharged 406, and my current 03 Lightning running 17 psi, all of these on 91 octane (which sucks!). And except for the Lightning, no intercooler either.

You'll be happy with the AFR heads. The Vic Jr's are very good bang for the buck also, have them on the 406. I was trying to come up with a simpler cheaper way to go.

Good luck with your project.

Re: More Boost!!!!

Water/alcohol injection is great. After a lot of experience with it I can strongly recommend it.

Just throwing this out there and rskrause is probably more experienced with the fbody then I am, however, couldn't you run a thicker gasket (like a cometic) to drop the CR down a bit?

Re: More Boost!!!!

1BadAssGT- I've been waiting for someone to advise the same. I saw an advertisement on Cometic Gskts. They have a various thickness on there gskts .019-.120 I think something like that. But there must be an inherent problem to running thicker gskts because no one has come on here to approve of this method........Joe

Re: More Boost!!!!

JT Metal,
I don't know why water injection gives you the creeps. I've probably been using it longer than anyone else here -- six years.

Jody,
I'm curious about your water/alky on your L with the stock Eaton. I have a 2000 L and I've read about the alky corroding the inside of the Eaton (or something like this). I've always thought that you need to inject the water/alky after the blower, not before. So how is it done with the stock Eaton?

Re: More Boost!!!!

Willie,

Some people have said that it will corrode the rotors; never did on mine. I haven't seen any pics yet of alcohol damage, but the thought keeps being brought up on the L boards. I ran it for 6-8 months with the Eaton, rotors look like new. I use ethanol when I can get it, much less corrosive than methanol.

I have a KB on there now which doesn't use coated rotors; it shows no ill effects either. Mine is injected at the intake boot, pointing directly at the throttle blades. It could be done to inject it in the lower intake, just a LOT more work.
