Max lift for beehives?

I'm in the process of building my 383 and I already have 1.6 rockers for it but the cam calls for 1.5s. (I know....cart before the horse problem ) The beehives came on the heads from Lloyd with the LE2 work put on them. The cam specs out at 224/224 568/568 on a 114. If I use the 1.6s I believe that puts the lift @ 606. This is not a daily driven car, but I don't want reliability issues because of too much lift on the springs. Hopefully in the next few days I'll be buttoning it up for good and will need this info soon.

Thanks,

Bryan

Where did you get the cam? Are you sure those arent the 1.6 spec's?

It's a comp cam and I already doublechecked with them and it is spec'd for 1.5s. I had thought about that since some cams are designed to run the 1.6 rockers to get the lift #'s.

He is using the 3100 Lobes from comp, you need to through a lot of spring at those lobes or keep the revs in the 6200 range. Same lobes I plan on running with my D1SC setup.
If you shim the 918's they should work, From what I have heard Comp just came out with a new line of beehives that can handle .650 and better lift

My TFS Heads/BRE Cam came set up for a 1.6 rocker and the cam is showing .610 lift......Lloyd told me that the Beehives on my TFS heads are good to .650" lift....don't know which # spring they are though.

I'm curious...
If you're buying an aftermarket cam that calls for 1.5 rockers, why would you run 1.6 rockers?

I'm not saying it's a bad idea (Although it's not automatically a good one either.), I'm just interested in your thought process here.

Re: Max lift for beehives?

Like I said in the above post I put the "cart before the horse" and bought the rockers first. (this was when I was going to stay NA with a cam I already had) The project then spiraled out of control (FI ) and bought a cam that was turbo friendly "used" off of the board. Most of the cams I had seen were spec'd with 1.6 rockers so I thought this cam was too. (we all know what happens when we assume ) So now I'm trying to figure out if this is workable or not. If not, I'll just buy some 1.5s but would rather use what I have.

Thanks,

Bryan

Re: Max lift for beehives?

I had the larger beehives on my TFS heads, with .577 lift, and had 4 break within the first 20 min. of run time. The Comp tech guy said even though they are advertised to be good up to .600 lift, once they approach ~.580ish, if the ramp angle is severe enough, the beehives will break. they upgraded me to a double spring with a dampner, and appologized for selling me the incorrect spring for my custom grind cam.

Ide be weary going to the 1.6's, stick with the 1.5's, especially if thats what your cam and springs are spec'd to.

Re: Max lift for beehives?

I guess I'll just break down and buy the 1.5s. I was kinda hoping I would hear more people say that have tried it with no problem. I don't want ANY trouble with this engine (until the boost kicks in )

Anybody want to buy a brand new st of 1.6s?

Thanks for the replies,

Bryan

Just make a good sales pitch to you know who when he makes it over to your shop to get you know what. What kind of rockers are they anyway?

Re: Max lift for beehives?

I am using comp 918 beehives with .577 on the exhaust side on a comp xe grind. I rev the car to 6200 when racing. Had them on for a few months now with no problems.

Re: Max lift for beehives?

If you can get the correct recommended installed height of 1.80" there should not be a problem. It is difficult to get this height on LT1 heads without longer valves or valve seat machining. I got 1.74" with stock valves and+.050 keepers. No problems whatsoever with mine, they have been perfect. My lift is 536/555 I believe.

The guy who broke 4 springs, what was the installed height? This one sounds like they were not installed correctly.

Re: Max lift for beehives?

most beehives are rated for .600 max but you wont have a problem going .006 over that

they were installed at 1.880... when comp set them up with my cam specs on their machine...they were breaking them as well, then the tech said they are really only supposed to be used on a .570 lift cam, not .600...but sometimes you can get away with it at .600, unless you are running a cam with a very aggressive ramp angle

i dunno what the deal with the beehives is...but my machine shop said they have tried to use them in the past...and also broke them with around .570 lift..and before anyone asks...no, my machine shop did not set mine up also, i set them up, so i know they were correct
