LT1's weakness..?

Hey guys, I joined this site because people here seem more knowledgeable about boost than over at Z28.com.

I know on Preludes that if you boost the stock motor you will eventually break off the ring lands.. I used to own one so I researched all of that.

What is generally the first thing to go on LT1's with boost? I realize that it depends on the motor, but is there a known weakness?

If I were to build the LT1 for boost, since my motor has 150k I was planning on swapping in a forged block from Summit for $2k and then putting on some 64cc heads to knock the compression down. Any experience with those? It seems like the common thing to do is just build the old block.

LT1 iron block will handle 1000hp. Not really an issue for a street car. Its the ringlands on the stock pistons that is a problem as well on the LT1.

What are your power goals?

Probably 500-600 at the wheels. I was thinking about a Precision PT67 with a .68 hot side. I wasn't looking for big numbers as much as drivability and linear power.

Due to the relative high compression of the LT-1 and the use of hypereutectic pistons, these are the "weak link" with stock Lt-1 motors in a forced induction application.

Ah, ok. Makes sense..

Ultimately, if I had the money, I would rather just buy the block and build a motor. I hate risking things..

PS- I meant stock stock motor.. I see how you could be confused when I said LT1. I meant, as my car sits, what's the weakness. Sounds like it's the pistons..

for 500-600 hp, id toss a set of forged, dished pistons, and a good set of rods. The only other thing you need to worry about with the stock lt1, is that they are set up with tight bearing clearances from the factory and boost has tencdency to cause them to spin a bearing. So make sure you run good oil pressure
