Lots of boost, which crank Compstar Comet or Eagle ESP?
Lots of boost, which crank Compstar Comet or Eagle ESP?
I'm going to be runing around 20psi and since there is an issue with my stealth crank (nothing major just put on backburner) I decided to go with a new crank for now to keep the project moving.
Trying to decide which crank is best for big power/boosted application, my issue is I already have the following:
'
Compstar 5.7" callies rods (new)
JE -31cc pistons for a 5.7" rod / 3.75 stroke setup (new)
Need new crank, does anyone know can the Compstar Comets be used with a 5.7" rod? I see most of their cranks require a 5.825" rod or longer
The Eagle ESP cranks advertise up to 1500 HP, and they state they are good for 5.7" rods.
Not sure which to get, and if I get the compstar Comet if it will hold up to lots of power and will it work with a 5.7" rod. (its a 383).
Any advise would be nice, I'm calling Callies and Eagle on Monday. hope to get some insight before then.

Re: Lots of boost, which crank Compstar Comet or Eagle ESP?
I am seeing ~14 psi on a 97ss 383 - D1 MM6 app. Callies sold me a "Dragonslayer" 3.75" stroke 1 pc seal crank. Eagle 6" H beams and JE -28cc pistons.
I also have an Eagle forged crank for another motor. The shop told me Eagle cranks can have a "U" ground profile front to rear. It is best to measure the pins and journals since many of these China made cranks can have suspect quality machine work.

Re: Lots of boost, which crank Compstar Comet or Eagle ESP?
The way some machine shops have explained it to me is that there is nothing wrong with eagle. Where the extra "problem" is with Eagle is time spent during balancing and what not. So it is more work for the machine shop to get it right with the cheaper cranks, but they are not really considered weaker than their high dollar counter parts.
I guess I would spend the money on the comp star so your not relying on guy at a machine shop to get your balance on and everything. Comp star will be a lot closer as it comes from the factory. So im told.

If you're planning on lots of boost/power, don't skimp on the engine internals. Compstar works, but a Dragonslayer, Lunati Sledgehammer, ect would be higher recommended.
Re: Lots of boost, which crank Compstar Comet or Eagle ESP?
People have no problems with stock **** up to 700 horse (talking cranks). So why go so far to say you need the most expensive **** out there?
Majority of people are not going for a 1000+ rwhp.. and if they are, generally they do not ask this type and question and just go for the better stuff anyways.
Its all for a piece of mind. I think any Callies or compstar crank will be plenty. I honestly believe Scat/Eagle will hold up to anything the average person will dish to them. Again you just end up putting more trust into your machine shop/engine builder.
