log manifold kit opinions

im trying to decide weather or not to do a turbo instead of just an N/A build... i have been looking into the log manifold kit. i like the way that all the exhaust is kind of behind the motor, and you only really see some of the piping and the turbo. i also like the placement of the turbo better with this kid. i would most likely just buy the hotparts, and do the rest of the system myself. i guess im just looking for more pics of the kit on the car, and opinions on the kit. if i did go this route, i would still build the motor for it, and it would most likely still be a 383 or 396 with TFS heads from AI. i know theres alot more than just these things, so what else will i need to go turbo? also the log kit, ive heard some bad things about them. but, from what it says on the site, its good for 650-700 rwhp, which is about what i would be looking for if i went this route. im kinda interested in it because i know id like to stay with the lt1, and not many guys are doing turbos on them, thanks for any help guys!!

anyone? i like the look of the log kit because the crossover and everything is behind the engine and you just see the turbo, but i want the header kit for the potential to grow...

ive also read that a good forged 355 or 383 is a better option than a 396 and with a turbo cubes are not always bigger better, is this true? thanks for the help guys

They'll do at least that. Mine did 700 rwhp through an A3 with a loose converter. That's the equivalent of at least 800 rwhp on an M6, and I wasn't max'd out on boost.

As for the cubes. . . I've seen lots of data and came up with a theory as to why smaller cubes can make more power, but there's one problem. You HAVE to run more boost to get that power. For instance, with a T76, a 180 cid engine might make 1000 rwhp, but it takes 40 psi boost to get there. A 355 might make 900 rwhp, but it takes 24 psi to get there. A 396 might only make 850 rwhp, but it only takes 21 psi to get there. So, the smaller motor has more max hp potential when the turbo is max'd out, but at lower boost levels (where most people run), the large engines will do better. Clear as mud?

A few years back, I went from 383 cid to 363 cid in search of this extra power. What I found was that I lost low-end torque and suffered through longer spool times, all so that I could make less hp because I wasn't running the 20++ psi it would take to make the 363 shine.

yeah thats pretty clear, most i would want to run would be about 15 psi, thats what i planned on anyways, so should i still stick with the 396 at that level or not?

The 396 actually sacrifices some piston strength because the pin is so high in the piston. For that reason, I'd go 383 with 5.7 rods.

+1 what Mike said. Thats my setup. Granted i'm supercharged, but same deal. 383 with 5.7's. I made 735 to the wheels on 13psi. Ported LT1 heads, mild cam and a ported Victor EFI single plane.

Here is a build thread:

http://ltxtech.com/forums/showthread...o-Turbocharger.

Keep in mind, he did not have to relocate any accessories for the kit to fit, he just wanted to do it.

wow i should just buy his car lol. thats exactly what im wanting to do, my rad is already forward, all accessories are gone except alt. anyways. and i have a tubular k member and arms, the rest of the car would handle the power as it sits, so im seriously thinking about getting one of the log kits, i like the look of them the best and i love the turbo placement. but the wastegate plumbing, how does it meet back up with the exhaust? i like the look of this kit the best(and price) but i want the potential to grow, deff. going with the 383 with AI tfs heads so the power will be there...

and thanks for that link jon
