I think the intercooler might not be big enough for your turbo. 19lbs of turbo boost is hotter than 13lbs of blower boost.

Since its spinning higher rpm sooner than the blower it might have just been making hot air.

Did you log IAT's?

Re: Let the games begin! Turbo vs. supercharger test.

Today, I replaced the pipe going from the intercooler to the MAF. I went from 2 1/2" up to 3" mandrel bent, plus I left out my GEN 1 Eclipse bypass valve.

It immediately pegged the boost gauge. I had to back off on the boost controller by over 2 full turns to get it back down to 14 psi boost. At 14 psi boost in the intake, the turbo discharge pressure was a little over 16 psi versus 19 psi before. So, my intake pressure drop is a little over 2 psi versus 5 psi before. Not sure why it's still higher than the supercharger, since I'm using all the same parts. . .

Also, a 3 psi drop in restriction sure seems to have made a big difference as far as the turbo is concerned, since I had to make such a drastic adjustment in the boost controller. I wonder if the bypass valve was leaking also. . .

Time to get that thing back on the dyno then now that (hopefully all) of the issues are worked out.

1st gen DSM bypass valves are only good to about 17psi unless they've been modified with the "crushed" technique. My daily driver is a 92 Talon AWD turbo fwiw.... That would certainly explain the high reading at the turbo and much less at the plenum.

How are the IAT's compared to the vortech.

Re: Let the games begin! Turbo vs. supercharger test.

Okay. . . finally got some conclusive results today.

Vortech T-trim at 13 psi with Hooker LT's made 548 rwhp.

T-76 GTS at 11 psi, same cam, log header, same intercooler made 547 rwhp. So, at 2 psi less, it made the same hp.

Then. . . I turned the boost up to 19 psi with Methanol injection and it made 680 rwhp through a TH-350 and loose converter - more on that later. . .

Re: Let the games begin! Turbo vs. supercharger test.

I have pic's of the hot parts only, but the link is broken.

Basically, the routing is similar to TTi's kit, but mine uses a 3" log and 3" downpipe, versus their 2 1/2" for both. The turbo is situated in the same location as the Vortech, except the air inlet faces forward. The Vortech Aftercooler is in it's normal location above the driver's side valvecover.

Cool Re: Let the games begin! Turbo vs. supercharger test.

Are you still scared to bring it to North LA this weekend?

Dynojet. Keep in mind the tranny/converter. Notice that all the cars making very high rwhp (750+) are 6 speeds, except Big Rick.

At 3750 lb, my car ran 10.40 at 133 mph with 550 rwhp.

If you picked up ~130hp since your 133mph run, you should be able to hit ~140-141 now. I can't wait to go for a ride in it.

So I guess you'll be sticking with the turbo?

Re: Let the games begin! Turbo vs. supercharger test.

Getting back to our original guesses, want to post the dyno graphs of the vortech and the turbo at 13psi, if you did a pull at that boost pressure? I'm curious to see who's guess for the HP and torque is right.

Me: -10 hp, +100 ftlb (though I have the advantage of driving the car)

BTW, the old set up made 547 rwhp at 6500 rpm and 571 ftlb 3700 rpm.

Rather than messing with the boost controller to get exactly 13 psi, I decided to get a low and high boost hp number then interpolate. At 16.625 hp/psi, it should make 580 rwhp at the same 13 psi.

That makes it right at 31 rwhp more than the supercharger at the same boost level, with supposedly the wrong cam (224/236-114) and a crappy log header.

Congratulations to Flip94TA for the most optimistic and almost exact guess.

Mike
