Kooks = no oil cooler. Will I still be alright?

So I am installing a set of Kooks headers in my Z soon, and I just learned that they will not fit with the factory oil cooler, so the oil cooler has to be removed.

My D1SC obviously makes the engine run warmer than it did from the factory or even when it was heavily modified as N/A. On a hot summer day I see temps around 195 or so (engine temp). I am assuming oil temps were similar. Without the oil cooler will things still be okay with my boosted LT1?

You will not have an issue. A lot of people remove the system as it can be prone to leaking. Generally you may want to look into improving the cooling system but I'm not entirely familiar with your setup. Your D1SC is a self contained unit correct?

You will be fine. No oil cooler for me for the last 4 years.

Well thats good to know. Yes the D1SC is self contained and does NOT share the same oil from the engine. But in general it does make the car run hotter than from the factory, and I was curious how much warmer things (like engine temps and the oil) would be affected by no oil cooler.

Good! Did you see any inrease in temps? If so what were they?

Ben,

Haven't had an oil cooler in over 12 yrs. Not sure as to why your D1sc makes your car run hotter, aside from the blower itself getting hot inside the bay. My car doens't get any hotter than when it was a N/A 396 and 401. And this was w/ the stk coolant system, also ran the F1 w/ it too and no changes. I have since installed a fluidyne rad as it has a thicker core but I see no difference in it either.

FI in general will increase your running temps, most see this (myself included). Not sure if the F1 doesn't give off as much heat maybe?

For now I think I am just going to see what happens. I am hoping the increase in temps will be minimal.

Ben, I'm sure the F1 gets hotter than a D series but the only thing I've done is go EWP, 160 stat 70/30 distilled/anti-freeze and a water wetter. That's it. Works like a charm for me anyways.

Have you bought your Kooks yet? On the fence myself and getting to ready to get Kooks or OBX myself and custom oval y-pipe. But before I do, got to make sure the crank trigger/XIM/cop setup works 1st.

Silas, yes, I have bought my Kooks, and they should be installed within the next few weeks. I am also getting a custom Y-pipe.

What is a crank trigger/XIM/cop setup?

Ben,

Something very similar to EFI connects setup. Since I already use a stand alone ECU, I couldn't use their existing components w/ the exception of the LS2 coils. So what I had to do was have an opti built to just use the cam signal w/ custom harness to integrate to the LS2 coils, FAST mag crank trigger and FAST XIM (Ignition module) to fire the controls and custom harness from the XFI to the XIM. Wanted to be opti less altogether but this setup is pretty much that. Waiting on the crank trigger, opti & harness's now. Hopefully by the eom I'll be good to go.

Think I'm gonna go OBX myself but your outcome will weigh heavily on whether I do Kooks myself.

Silas, that sounds like a mess to get all that custom stuff just to avoid the opti! But, I'm sure when you get it all figured out it will undoubtingly run better than my factory opti, factory PCM setup.

I am confident the Kooks setup with custom Y will be a great improvement over my Hooker LT's and hooker y-pipe. I was only running 1 3/4 primaries before, and with my blower setup, I could certainly gain a few more ponies by upgrading to the 1 7/8 primaries. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Yeah, it d oes sound like a hot mess. But it's pretty much pnp from what I've been told but we'll see. LOL I'll have to do a little wiring from the XFI to the XIM but just extending wires as it all ready has gm connectors to accept the XIM. The part that does suck is the XIM is the exact same size of the XFI, why the ignition module couldn't be small I suppose is the capability of it. Car looks like a UFO inside the cockpit w/ all these lights blaring. LOL I'll get some pics up during the install of it all.

1 3/4 headers also w/ the FLP's but the y is only 2.25 so it's choking there. Going w/ oval 2 1/2 X 4 which is equivalent to 3.5 round. I'll be using V-bands and oval round transitions off the collector, custom mergered then back to oval round transition to the I-pipe which is 4". Should be very healthy.

Not sure if there was a temp change or not. I removed the oil cooler at the same time the car went FI.

I pulled mine after my blower install and didn't notice much of a difference...

Re: Kooks = no oil cooler. Will I still be alright?

That actually is helpful. Thanks. I am having a bunch of maintenance things done as well, so mine won't be done for another week or two. I'll see how mine turns out, but it sounds like there won't be much of a difference.

Thanks to all those that put some meaninful insight in.
