junk yard twins?
junk yard twins?
anyone know of some good doner vehicles to pull turbo's off of for doing a twin setup on an lt1. i know most are small 4 bangers with small turbos, i'm looking for 500-550 with the twins before moving into a single t76 with goals of 700-750hp.
so where should i look in the yard???

Re: junk yard twins?
the 14b is good for roughly 400cfm, but if the seals are worn and its beaten I wouldnt spin it that hard. They can max out to 14-15psi up to 6700rpm on a 2L motor, but that's pushing past their efficiency range and honestly not something you want to do... I wouldnt expect much from a turbo so old on a v8, espicially with their tiny exhaust housings and internal wastegates, though ported I've seen rating as high 470cfm... Thats the stocker on a 1990-1994 Talon/Eclipse/Laser 5spd. Good little turbo, and cheap. They could work, but they are also water AND oil cooled. Much more complicated piping in the engine bay. If you're up to the task though, they are probably the best "bang for the buck" junkyard turbos you will find.
the turbo on the same era cars (but the automatic tranny) is the 13g, which is good for 350-360cfm. Dont touch it.
turbo on the VR4 3000GT's are the 9b turbos, they are good for like 275cfm each, not a good choice.
the 1995-1999 Eclipse/Talon cars came with a T25 turbo, dont even touch em.
Why do twins when you're going to end up going single? You will have to re-fabricate all of your lines and piping. You barely would be able to re-use anything...
IMHO that sounds like a silly idea, spending the time and effort to build a turbo kit and then changing it. Better off doing it once and doing it right, just build the single kit and call it a day. You'll more less cash in the end too, but have fewer headaches without blown turbos and leaking seals. Some of the newer Master Power turbos can be had for cheap and will perform decently. Or a used T76 could be had without too much hassle...
But I hate twin turbo setups. Royal pain in the rear.

Re: junk yard twins?
You can do a lot better than the little turbos off import cars. T04s are readily available, you just have to know where to find them.

I need to get my AJE account going. I didn't get much interest for the buy-in the first time, so I passed on it. I need some front end stuff for the Mustang now, so it may be a good time to do it.

dang you live in nashville, il??? what did you say your last name was??? i'll hit the yellow pages and find me a nice turbo or two! lol
too cool, anyway, my buddy keeps pushing me to go the junk yard route to get my feet wet before dishing out alot of cash to do a big setup. i didn't think i could find anything usefull so i thought i'd ask.
what about sylcone, typhoon or gn turbos?? i think they can be had pretty cheap.
as for the mp's i'm not sure which models i should be looking at. they don't tell you what hp they are good for anywhere and i'm not up on the whole cfm thing, not sure how much an lt1 requires for what hp. ect.

The SVOs had a small T3 on them.
They are an IHI turbo w/ either a .48 or .64 A/R on the hot side, .60 on the intake side.
Re: junk yard twins?
If you want to spend a little more money, go over to turbobuick.com or turbobuicks.com and buy two stockers. The average stocker price is $150+shipping. Most of the guys just sell them to upgrade to a larger turbo.
Later,
Steve.

Re: junk yard twins?
i thought they wouldn't work with the higher rpm's of gas engines because diesel's run such low rpms? i know some guys change the housing of the hot side to compensate but i don't know enough about sizing yet to do that.
