is this intercooler ok or crap??

I found these on ebay, what do I need to look out for? It is bar and plate design. I cant think of any reason these wouldnt work as well as the next intercooler as they are a pretty simple design. Please enlighten me on wether or not to purchase one of these.

Its not designed well at all, but its cheap...hehe. Endtank placement is incorrect. The endtank inlet and outlets should never be in a parrallel position. One of the tanks needs to be flipped. Otherwise your only going to use 1/4 of the core for cooling.

On ebay they actually show it mounted on an TA. It probably wouldn't cost much to take it to a radiator shop and have one of the ends flipped. $40 for shipping is slilly, it probably only weighs 10lbs. I think its a good deal overall.

Re: is this intercooler ok or crap??

Definitely do a search for them on LS1tech ... Lots of happy folks over there with these intercoolers, which prompted me to pick one up a few weeks ago. They've been proven to work very well, and out perform setups like the ATI dual intercooler in pressure drop and charge temps. Core was surprisingly a very high quality piece - bar and plate design, with good fin spacing (if I remember right, it was around 10 FPI on the charge side, and 14 on the ambient air side), and both sides used louvered fins.

As far as the comment about the end tank design, I agree. Having the outlets positioned on opposite sides on the tank will always yield better charge distribution across the core, but it would be a lot harder to package/install an intercooler this size with an inlet or outlet at the top of the core. I've seen plenty of bell, spearco, PTE intercoolers setup the same way. I'd say 25% distribution is an exaggeration, but if I had the space, I would flip one of the tanks. Considering that you can pick up a new 24"x12"x3" [or x4"] intercoolers for less than $250, you could have the tank cut off and re-welded and still be way ahead of your buddy that bent over for the bell/spearco/PTE. Lucky for me, the people that have them installed seem to think that they work pretty good "as-is".

Re: is this intercooler ok or crap??

do you guys think that this would be enough intercooler for a 496 with a YSi. We are aiming for 750-800 crank HP on pump and the blower wouldn't be pulleyed too much so cfm wouldn't be too far past the 1250 they list.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but I would be very interested in knowing where you can find an intercooler of this size for $250 or something even close in price. Do you have a link or company name/phone #??? Thanks!

Did you click on the E-bay link posted at the very beginning of the thread? There are literally hundreds of them for sale through several ebay stores ... I got my 24"x12"x4" intercooler (31" including core) from an ebay vendor for $212.
