Ideal compression for a turbo'd 355

What would be an ideal compression if I ever decide to run boost on a 355 rebuild? I'll have an XE 230/236 and either 30# or 36# SVO's...

Thanks!

Between 8 and 9 for most apps. It depends how much boost you want to run.

Well if I do go FI I'm definitely down for the "blower without the belt" Do turbo setups run about the same psi as pullied superchargers? I wouldn't be running anything over 9psi I'd guess...probably around 6psi for starters...

Turbos are genrally used when someone wants to get into high boost applications. Its alot easier to run more boost with one, and they dont lose as much hp per lb of boost as a blower does. If your not going to be running 15 psi+ it would probbaly be much easier to go with a blower.

Oh ok I didn't know that. I do want to go with a turbo because they can sometimes be found cheaper than a SC. 15+ psi would be fine...did I also read that you can get away with 12.0 compression and a blower set up? Possibly high 11.8's...?

Take whatever number you found for the turbo setup and add a nice 2.5 safety-factor to it. Believe me, there is no "cheap" way do run 15+ psi to do it right.

Even running C16, you won't be able to touch 15psi and 11.8 CR. That sounds more like an alky setup.

that cam is not ideal at all for a turbo setup......any particular reason you wanna use that instead of a custom grind for a turbo?

I agree. I'm running 214/210 at 510/510 lift on 115 LSA. You dont' need a big cam to make power with turbo's. Plus, you need to watch the overlap on FI applications. I'm sure Rich, Steven, Jordon, Jim, SMOKN, etc will agree.
Call Turbo People in New York if you've got lots of money or Cam Motion in Louisiana (sp) if you'd like to spend a little less. They'll tell you the same thing we just did.

Well once I drop the phat cash on a turbo setup I'll be going with a custom grind and probably 1.5 to 1.52 heavy duty rockers. Until then Ill be running an XE 230/236 and just having my heads ported...

What should I look for in a custom grind for a turbo setup?

Not exaclty sure what to look for in a turbo setup, but the companies above will be more than happy to let you know.

PM me when you're ready to go turbo. I may be selling my T76 setup...

just looking around at peoples turbo cams, ive noticed that they are all equal duration (220/220) or they intake is longer than the exhaust (220/215)...............this is the opposite of supercharger cams.

i think the shorter exhaust duration creates higher velocity for spooling the turbo more effectively, but i might be wrong.

Darth, a turbo can be very efficient even at low boost levels. It all depends on how the wastegate is set. The nice thing about a turbo is that it will produce full boost throughout the RPM range of the motor where a supercharger will only make full boost at the motor's redline. So you get a nice, fat area under the curve. And bigger s.

Faceless, when you're looking at turbos, are you looking at only the price of the head unit or the price for the entire setup? I'm just curious cause usually it's a bit more expensive to do a turbo setup than it is to do a supercharger setup.

Oh, and there's pretty much no way you're going to run high compression and a supercharger/turbocharger on the street, or at least not for very long.
