How much turbo shaft play means a rebuild?

I have a large used 76mm holset turbo that ill be using so i want to make sure everything is up to spec. I cant id the thing because it was rebuilt and re-tagged. It's i great condition and spins freely but has a bit of play. Im wondering how much play is too much? Im looking for .0xx" measurment's for as new shaft play and whats allowable before a rebuild is needed.

Thanks
-Eric

I had my old PT-76 out of the car because I wa taking something out and I came across the same thing. I called Precision because I was a little concerned with how much play was in the shaft (up and down) They told me that there will be some play, but the important part was that there is NONE in and out, some up and down is OK. I sent it in anyway and they replaced the bearings, and when I got it back it had the same up and down play.

If it doesn't move in and out I wouldn't worry about it much.

cool theres no in and out play. The play is prob around .030 so i guess the oil tightens it up allot.

just found this while searching around, note how they dont mention the side to side play.

http://www.turboparts.info/pages/620208/index.htm

"3. Feel

Push inward on one of the wheels while you turn it by hand. Do you feel any rubbing or binding? Now try the other wheel. What do you feel? The wheels should turn freely with no scraping or rubbing noises from contacting the housing, backplate or shroud.

If the turbocharger passed all these checks, then it's probably O.K.,and the trouble lies elsewhere in the engine or supporting systems."
