Re: How Much is Too Much HP?

My car is at 475rwhp in its current tune and it is somewhat boring to me in 3rd and 4th gear. I'd agree that 600rwhp would make it fun in 3rd and 4th and is probably the limit of tire technology and suspension using reasonably safe street legal tires.

I'm feelin' a little better about the project. I'll leave it up to Cali emissions to keep the power down slightly, and will use only about 10PSI normally, and move up to 15PSI when it's really needed.

Don't be a wussy... you want more power! This will be quite interesting once our rebuilds are done. Your 355, AFR190, single turbo Vs. my D1 Procharged 383 + LE2 heads.

I talked to my engine builder and he said that 4 bolt splayed caps was overkill unless I plan on making 650+rwhp.

Talking Re: How Much is Too Much HP?

Yes it should. Oh, and they're the 195CC LT4 heads.

I guess I should get 4 bolt splayed caps then.

Re: How Much is Too Much HP?

Brady, when he had the twin turbo in his Z28, had commented once that anything over a half inch of pedal travel was speeding up hard, he couldn't even dream about giving it half throttle until 3 gear and if he floored it the tires would still brake loose and just spin. If he got on it and kept it from spinning by 3rd he was well into triple digit speeds. As I remember he had fun with it but decided he wanted something different.

It sounds like I'll need to use the cruise control a lot. How much was he putting out with his twin setup?

Re: How Much is Too Much HP?

the "resume" button on cruise control might be a little too aggressive... it'll probably crack the throttle like it does on a stock car and light up the tires, only to let off once the tires reach cruise speed... I can picture it being a cycle of violent cer jerking. Once at speed, it should be fine.

anyone tried cruise/resume on a 650+rwhp car?

Works fine. As far as I ever tried it, it has no speed limit. I set it at 110 once and it was perfectly happy.

Well, that would be funny as heck though. Imagine beating some one on an acceleration run by only resuming your cruise control.

Re: How Much is Too Much HP?

In my opinion, anything under 500 rwhp is fast but easily controlable, anything over 650 rwhp is going to be a dyno king, but you'll probably get beat on the street by guys running much less horsepower becouse of your loss of traction. Ideally I would say between 500-650 rwhp, for a good mix of raw power, and with feathering out the gas with the right tires, decent ability to stay on the street.

I'll definitely have to learn throttle modulation. The fact that it currently is an auto will help the consistency of the car for sure.

Turbo kit has been ordered. I guess there's no going back now...

Re: How Much is Too Much HP?

Why pay the little extra to have the better turbo, when you are nearly going to have a door slammer engine in your car?

Think about this, the fastest 1/4 mile time for a modified suspension 1992 Mustang GT with a completely stock drivetrain, was around high 11s low 12s.
That's on 220 hp.

I also knew a guy with a big block trans am type nostalgia scca race car (70 Mustang) who took it to Rt 66 to see what it'd do in the 1/4 and ran 10s.

I would limit it to 650. You can make or break it with the suspension after that.

I would build the motor to handle 800, but build it to run at 600-650. Then with the right suspension, it'll hook off the line and in the twisties.

good luck and of course keep us posted.

If I'm going to spend money, I'm going to do it once. I shouldn't have more than 700 to the wheels with the emissions still there. Also I went with the eboost2 controller, so I will be able to keep the boost down a little in the first couple of gears to keep the car controllable.

I'll keep everyone posted.
