How Much Boost can it handle?
How Much Boost can it handle?
I was wondering how much boost can my stock crank handle. I plan to run 12-14 on a lt1 engine with only forged pistons and rods and keep the crank stock. Will it hold up to the power?

It will hold it, but for how long under what use are you going to use it for? The stock cast cranks are stronger than what most people think. A friend of mine had a 1996 355 Z with a stock crank and the rest of the internals forged that with 10 pounds from a Vortech S-trim made 574 to the wheels. I would think that it would hold 2 or more pounds of boost if it is not a car that is being flogged on at the track on a regular basis.

Wow I guess the stock crank can handle a ton of power. I was only looking to push my stock crank at somewhere in the 500rwhp range. But I guess according to this thread I will be just fine. - Thanks everyone for replying
Re: How Much Boost can it handle?
Stock cranks hold up pretty well as long as nothing in the setup is pushed to or beyond its limitations. 550, maybe even 600, is doable, but you are approaching limitations and would be on borrowed time. There is a guy in our local club that is running over 800 rwhp (nitrous) on stock LS1 crank w/forged pistons and rods; he is on borrowed time (also has deep pockets). The harder you push things, the better the tune and components must be; especially in FI. At 550 hp, if you go lean, or intake charge temps rise too high, your engine will start to detonate, and at high rpms, it could be only seconds away from catastrophic failure, even with forged components. Food for thought.
