Homemade turbo kit...

Just some pics of some garage work...it will go on a 383 LT1...Precision T76 Q trim w/ 40mm gate. Half was welded with fluxcore, half with gas. Had issues with my welder before.

It consists of 2.5" logs with 1.75" primaries. The DP will be 3"... looking for 700rwhp thru M6...

Feel free to comment or post questions/advice.

700 at the wheels on a 3 inch downpipe? You're moving a lot of air at 700. I have a 3.5" downpipe to where the exhaust passes under the tranny, then it necks down to 3 inch. Just by dropping the cat-back section my car picked up over 40 horsepower. I'm redoing it all to be 3.5" in the next month.

Fit a 3.5" or 4" downpipe if you can. You can't have too much exhaust on a turbo car.

Chris, so you think immediately expanding from the 3" outlet on the turo to a 3.5" will get to 700rwhp, but 3" wont? Just wondering. Incase the pics arent clear, the driver's side #7 primary swings around the crossover pipe and then dumps into the log. This design should allow for a decent pickup in HP over a pass thru log setup I would think. The T76 is Tangential. Even the TTi pass thru setup with on center T76 and 3" DP will make 600rwhp... I was expecting a decent amount more. 3.5" may be doable depending on steering arm.

96TurboTA - Thanks.

It looks like it will be a total b1tch to change the plugs on the drivers side bank...

But, other then that everything looks good...

What is the tubing made out of?

Driver's side is a piece of cake from underneath (once the DP is out of the way). I need to take some pics of that and post them too.

16ga mild steel that will be coated for street use.

Re: Homemade turbo kit...

My general layout is similar to yours except for a couple of things. I can tell you put alot of time into those, so please don't take this offensively.

You might consider someday replacing the passenger's side log with a shorty header. I used an SLP shorty, whereas an AS&M or JBA would probably work fine. You probably stand to gain some power with the longer tubes and merged collector.

I used one of these http://store.airflo.com/90cb50r40.html on the inlet of my turbo to avoid the fans.

I'm not sure how your downpipe is going to fit. I had to place my turbo at an odd angle to aim the downpipe away from the steering column. Good luck!

The 3" downpipe might leave some room for improvement, but the PTK 355 LT1 made 987 rwhp with a 3" pipe. As long as the bends are smooth, it probably won't be that bad. Mine's 3" until it dog-legs to get under the car, then swage's up to 3.5" just ahead of the driver's seat.

What he said.... If you have a good amount time in those headers, making a set with individual primaries shouldn't out the question. IMO 3in downpipe is the least of your worry on that design. Should work fine though if you tune it right.

Re: Homemade turbo kit...

if you guys compare this to what is on the market, this should be a lot more effecient.... though the PTK (or now known as PTS) still is the leader, this "homemakde" kit will work great and possibly better than some kits being made.

But like the suggestions, you could get away with a shorty header in the pass side... but the drivers is either going to need a log or a header mounted backwards (wiht exhaust going towards front of car)...

I considered the header on the pass side, but I figured I'd build a log from scratch and see how it worked out. I am certain I can fit the DP and I will post pics soon. I agree with the 3". Obviously power can be gained by going larger, but in order to run above the k-member I decided to just do 3". Thanks for the advice and great link.

Shankels94TA - I will make my personal vehicle with a set of headers when I have more time. This was for a board member who wants to make ~700rwhp max and just have fun on the street. I think with the T76 he'll get there.

LT1-TA - Thanks. That was my rationalization. PTK is the best design. The only other company right now is TTi who make a pass thru log (not the best design as far as TTi's product). Engineermike has made a large pass thru log and made big power with it (which is a significant improvement over the TTi kit). I figure this kit will make more power than the TTi kit (especially since its not pass thru and I squeezed a tang. housing in there). If it can make similar numbers to Mike's kit it would be awesome.

Yes, I do think you'll pick up a lot of power with a 3.5" or 4" downpipe over a 3 inch. Like I said, on my car just dropping the 3 inch exhaust after the downpipe netted 40 horsepower, and that's with a downpipe that necks down to 3" before it passes under the tranny. I'm not saying you can't make power with a baby downpipe, but if you can fit a bigger one and make more power with no sacrifices, why not? Remember that the pressure differential between the front and back side of the impeller helps the turbo spool. My spool time dropped by about 400-500 RPM by dropping the exhaust. On other turbo kits I've built I've always gone as big as reasonably possible after the turbo and I've never had poor results. Why not do it right the first time?
