Good place to get PCM custom tuned?
Good place to get PCM custom tuned?
Hey guys,
I installed a Vortech 6# supercharger kit quite a while back, and have been fighting with it ever since. All troubleshooting seems to indicate that the PCM tuning is where the problem lies, but SuperChips (the providers of the handheld PCM programmer that came with the kit) can't get it right.
The car now runs pretty well, but it's running extremely rich. Black smoke comes out of the pipes when the car starts, and the Service Engine and Service Vehicle lights keep coming on, throwing codes like "Catalytic Converter Ineffieciency" and "Rich Condition on Bank One." Sounds like the fuel mixture set in the PCM, right? This kit doesn't use an FMU, all fuel settings are run by the computer.
I've shipped the handheld back to SuperChips three times, and the problem has only worsened with their adjustments. The techs at Vortech are just as useless, their support is a complete joke. So, I decided that I'm going to have the PCM custom-tuned at my own expense, just so it will finally be working right.
So... can anybody recommend a good place to have a PCM tuned? I live near Salt Lake City, UT, but I can ship the PCM anywhere if needs be. Thanks a lot...

From the way you make it sound, your car is need of a good tune. Although im not sure of a local tuner in your area, you might wanna go into the local events section of the bored an ask if there is anybody near you who can tune your car. Im not sure if your willing to travel but if you are there are several places on the west coast that will tune your car.
Well, I am willing to travel if I can arrange a weekend to get the tuning done. If anybody knows a good shop in any of these areas, please let me know:
Utah
Nevada
Idaho
Colorado
Southern California
...some contact info for the shop would also be very helpful if you've got it. Thanks!

Trust me on this one. Go with Bryan Herter at www.pcmforless.com.
He has done my tuning via email, and will be dyno tuning a new setup in July. His customer service is second to none.

Brian at PCMfor less all the way. He is nice as hell, and will do a great job for cheap $99. He did mine anyway.

I would talk to some of the bigger shops and see what they can do for you. I have used MTI and had great luck. I have not dealt with pcm for less so can't comment on that one. Have seen some of Fastchips's stuff had one of their tunes but from what i have seen it is a shooting match whether you get a good tune or not.

Cool, thanks for the info. I e-mailed Bryan at pcmforless and he does seem very cool and very knowledgeable. I plan to send my PCM out to him later this week. He even says he's worked on some almost identical configurations. It's $250 for ODBII programming, plus $15 return shipping... not too bad.
Thanks guys,
