Gen 6 DFI vs. LT1_Edit
Gen 6 DFI vs. LT1_Edit
Finally got off my lazy *** and started to install this old school DFI and Variable Injector Controller combo.
Looking at the VIC harness, it installs completely independent of the main DFI box. In essence, the fuel maps will be controlled solely by turning *****, and not through the software? Seems kinda ghetto and a step down from LT1_Edit.
That said, since RPM will be limited well below 7K, and the VIC needed to run low impedence injectors is so primative, the only advantage of the DFI/VIC combo over LT1_Edit is the ability to read 2 or 3 bar MAP sensors. But then again LJ's box take's care of the low impedence injector compatibility issue.
Sure, Edit isn't real time, but you can't use it and not develop at least some patience
That said, is there any way to run a 2 or 3 bar MAP sensor with the stock PCM?
Hmmm......maybe this is an omen to step upto a FAST with a yummy wideband
Being broke sucks

Nick,
How does the VIC interface with the DFI box?
The injector wires connect directly to the VIC, and the VIC harness does not in any way connect to the main wiring harness on the DFI box

You just use one of the injector leads from the gen6 box and feed it to the wire by itself with the big white connector. I think it's a green wire? You can use any injector wire since that box fires all 8 at the same time.
I've never messed with LT1 edit but I have used the old TTS software. Being able to tune real time is a definite benefit. You can have a passenger watching a wideband and adjusting the map as you drive. It also has limited datalogging functions that are somewhat beneficial.
Just so you know the vic can only add fuel, not take it away. That part is not clearly spelled out in the instructions. You can set all of the ***** at say 10% though and then you can add and subtract from there if needed. This function is borderline useless though, I'm only using mine as an injector driver.

Brandy,
There is a green wire, second from the top on the VIC that reads "REF." If I understand correctly, just connect it to any one of the five wires coming off the big white round injector connector that hooks up to the DFI box?
Also, since this was purchased used, none of the connectors are labeled, the instructions suck ***, and Accel tech support never answers the phone, please allow me to pick your brain
Some of the connectors don't mate up correctly. For instance, the "black four pin" connector the instructions state is for the IAC obviously won't hook up to the stock IAC. Is there a special adapter/harness required?
Same deal with the coolant temperature sensor. Is there a different-from-factory sensor from Accel specific to DFI?
BTW, are you running a wideband? If so, what kind?
Thanks for all your help

Well you should have an injector harness plug and the harness to the injectors. Then you have a power and ground feed and I believe a 12 volt switched feed. Then the only wire left is the injector reference wire. If your DFI has that big white connected then the VIC should plug into it, unless someone hacked the connector off.
I use a stand alone FJO wideband. Not sure what it takes to make the dfi work with one. My kit also does not use the knock sensor.
As far as the IAC and coolant temp sensors go accel does sell them for their stuff. I used a fasttrack harness though so everything plugged in nicely. I *think* you can use a 93 model IAC motor with that connector but if not it's no big deal to cut and resplice the wires.

Brandy,
So there should be a white round connector at the end of the green wire? Looks like it got hacked. No big deal though - I'll just splice it to one of the injector wires.
BTW, how much for the Fasttrack harness?
Thanks again.
