Fuel system questions

Ok, I am pretty close to purchasing a used S-trim Vortech. I will be running the stock pulley size (6psi) until my motor blows up, and then ill obviously upgrade from there.

Right now, I have the mods in my sig + a 52 mm TB, and I will also have some 32 # injectors going on as well.

I am running the stock fuel system now for a 93 lt1. I know vortech recommends upgrading the stock injectors on 93's as opposed to using an FMU. After putting on the larger injectors, is there anything else i need to know about the fuel system at this power level? I will also be getting a tune for it. I figure it will add approx 80-90 rwhp so hopefully ill hit the big 400 rwhp.

Thanks

Re: Fuel system questions

Invest in a fuel pump kit from Racetronix. You can get them from Thunder Racing. Also, you should have it tuned with a wide band O2 on a dyno if possible.

What would I get with the kit as opposed to just getting the pump? Would you think that I could get away with just the pump?

Another subject..anyone have any ideas on what fuel pressure/boost gauges i should invest in?

Re: Fuel system questions

I got these cause they came close to matching the gauge cluster. Autometer Carbon Fibre gauges.

You can get away with just using the pump, but the kit is definately worth every penny.

Autometer gauges are nice. I've got a pair of their phantom gauges in my car right now that I'm converting over to Cobalts. I also have an entire set of their Ultra Comp gauges for my truck.

Re: Fuel system questions

I would suggest you upgrade to 42# injectors instead of the 32#. The 32# will provide enough fuel for the 6# setup, but not for a 9 - 10# setup.

I'm not going to upgrade boost until my engine blows..at that point i'll probably re-vamp everything up for more.

I'm thinking of putting on the 32#'s in conjuction with the FMIC. Is the supplied FMIC only calibrated for the injectors that are provided wtih the kits/on factory cars? Pro's/Cons of idea?

At this point, im not looking for maximum power, but more, maximum lifetime. If it blows up right away..no biggie..but I'd rather not have to tear into it within the first few weeks.

Re: Fuel system questions

Another question while I'm at it..i see on the vortech installation manual it comes with a crane ignition box. Is that necessary for the installation? I have an MSD right now. I also see in the supliment in the install manual that the crane is for car without a GM wiring harness...but i dont know why we wouldnt have a GM wiring harness...especially when it says in the disclaimers this kit is intended to be put on a stock car?

I assume you mean FMU? It increases fuel pressure based on boost.

The ignition box comes with a boost referenced timing retard dial. This is very important, unless you retune your car to pull timing. You could buy the MSD boost retart unit and attach it to you MSD to get the same result.

Yes, FMU, i dont know where i pulled fmic out of. I know it increases fuel pressure based on boost, (and maybe im not seeing this clearly) but is it specifically calibrated to increase boost based on stock injectors?(or in the case of a 93..the injectors that came with the car?). Wouldnt the size of the injectors(being bigger or smaller), mean that less/more fuel pressure is needed?

Ok, i will do some research on the MSD boost retard/tune to pull timing options. Thanks.

Re: Fuel system questions

A FMU is a crude way to provide more fuel during boost. The better way is to run bigger injectors and have the car dyno tuned, with a wideband O2 sensor, to correctly map you fuel and timing. This will also eliminate the need for boost timing retard module; run can run your existing MSD box.

If you want to go the FMU route, you'll need a fuel pump that can handle the high pressure demand and still should have the car dyno tuned to make sure it's running a safe air/fuel ratio.
