fi wear and tear

over the next several days ill be posting a zillion fi questions as i get ready to finalize my order. todays is: wear and tear from fi. i plan on getting a 12 bolt rear since people act like the rear is made of glass, but i dont see anything on the tranny rebuild. at what hp will i notice damage on an a4? does anyone sell a heavy duty rebuild kit? can the stock driveshaft handle 15psi? any other parts that will go in due time from fi? i have budgeted $11,500. for upgrades including some type of fi, (F1 procharger or sts) afr mongoose heads, custom grind cam, solid motor mounts, sfc's, stall, tubular lower control arms, forged dish pistons and connecting rods. next month or month after i can swing the rear. just need to know what else.

Re: fi wear and tear

dont think 11,500 will get you all that your thinking about. maybe if you really do a good job of getting used parts and doing this whole thing on a budget.

im planning on doing a very cheap 355 low CR motor for 4000 to 5000.

then figure the heads, cam, tuning, etc. you are talking about. and who will do the maintenance?

then the supercharger or turbo....at least 5000 for a decent set up.

driveline, rearend......etc.etc.

other guys will give you some more info. ive just seen many guys say they budget for a certain amount and say that they end up going twice over.....

so im taking what i think it will cost, and then adding at least 50% more for misc. stuff....

good luck.

The rule of thumb is to double your original estimate, and then add a few more bucks to it.

Re: fi wear and tear

Ok this subject has been written about a 100 times but this is what it cost me. Oh and by the way my tranny started giving me troubles at 425 RWHP and 417 TQ.
1.Forged Pistons and rods $1,000
2.Block work, rotating assembly balanced, 4bolt splayed caps $2500
3.lt4 heads and cam package $2100
4.D1sc system $3,300 (found a Good deal)
5.42LB injectors $315 (eBay)
6.alluminum drive shaft $325
7.LT1 edit $200
8.Boost and Fuel pressure gages + gage pod $200
9.intanke fuel pump $110

After that it got expensive first tranny had shift kit lasted a little over a year $1000. The second trany was a pro Yank lasted 8 months $2400. Last auto lasted 2 years built by performance transmission in Las Vegas $1200 with a TQ converter. 6 speed installed with ST clutch just under $3000, < I should of done this first.

The car has 15LB's of boost at 2200 feet Las Vegas and 17 at sea level.

I hope this helps.

Re: fi wear and tear

im not saying $11,500 is all i plan on spending, just thats what i have in pocket right now, and $3000. next month. i have paid already for tuning (tsp) mail order $250. other than that i just need to process my order with tsp for the rest but was figuring on afr heads $2200, cam $400, tc $480, f-1 s/c $6200. 12 bolt moser $2100. = $11,380. and use the 3k next month for installation. i plan on using the injectors and pump that comes with the f-1 kit til i can recoup some cash and upgrade them, so probably only run 8psi til i get the rest. after that 15psi and suspension upgrades.

Re: fi wear and tear

FWIW, I,m running a 383 with 9 psi of boost, 559 hp at the wheels was the best dyno run. My car has survived in its current state for about a year. Lots of abuse.

If you don't plan on big sticky tires and insane type launches ... then the stock differential will survive. Simply because normal street 275 X 40 tires will spin well before you can hurt the diff. Though I do recommend one of those girdles to help the rear end. If you go the sticky tire, launch suspension, then you will need the upgraded differential.

My stock A4 started giving up the ghost at 400 rwhp, just couldn't hold 2nd gear on the upshift.

You will need to rebuild your automatic transmission. See my web page, the details are in there some where. Boils down to a couple extra clutches, an up graded 2nd apply servo and a shift kit, then a little computer massaging on top of that and the trans will live with a lot of abuse.

And what they all said, it will cost more than you planned.

Hope this helps

Re: fi wear and tear

im not saying that 11,500 wont get you far cause it will. i personally would wait on the rear end stuff untill it goes out on you.

but it sounds like you are going to get her done the right way. not like me. im just keepin my fingers crossed for the time being. i dont drive the car but a little over 1000 miles a year and not hard either. so it should hold up for a while.....

have fun, and boost is sweet.

oh yeah, dont forget charge cooling. i want to see someone step up to an intercooled sts kit. im sure that someone has done it, just havent seen any pics....

thats what discouraged me from choosing sts, other than that, i really like the idea.
no im not planning on going crazy from a dig. 275's bfg dr's tho. not going wider than that. i just want the power to say i have it, not even to necessarily use it. kinda like my machine guns at home, just have them to say i have them. thanx for the help guys. if i may, one more question to keep this thread going so i dont have to open a new one. the time between all the engine work being done and the s/c being put on is a matter of 2-3 weeks. in that time can i drive it around with low compression from the dished pistons or is this a harm to the engine? im told it will be 8.5-1 or 9-1 cr. to make more allowances for more boost.

Re: fi wear and tear

Looks like you have a good plan, I put 3,000 miles on my engine before I put the supercharger back on 9 to 1 compression no problem.
