F2 427SBC '69 Camaro

This build will get me to my goal, or probably a bit quicker. :D The goal has been to run at least 8.50's. The current version of this motor has too much compression for the F2 at almost 14:1. When the Procharger goes on I'll replace the crank with one that has a BBC snout, swap the pistons to bring the compression down and convert to E85. It already has the blower cam in it and the F2 has been sitting in the box next to the car since last summer. Here are the parts involved:

Most of the parts have arrived now but still waiting on pistons and the dampener. I've also decided to go with the Holley Dominator EFI coil on plug set up with Injector Dynamics 2,000cc/min injectors. Injectors and fuel rails are supposed to be in next week so we can modify the intake manifold.

Re: F2 427SBC '69 Camaro
Nice! I have a good friend that built a '62 Nova with an LS2 with a turbo and used that Holley Dominator EFI. That system is awesome--tuning capabilities seem to be endless. I think you will like it. Anxious to see how your project turns out.

Fuel injection arrived from Holley today. Everything except the injector harness and 2nd O2 sensor harness. Those might arrive next week. Block is machined, cleaned and ready for assembling.

Pre-assembled the shortblock. Rod bolts are are a little close at the bottom of the cylinders so that needs a little grinding. Everything else is fine. The compression ratio came out to 10.1.

The crankshaft has arrived. Crower did a real nice job balancing it. Now the motor can go together for the final time. :)
Attachment 2587 Attachment 2588 The shortblock is ready to assemble. Would have been done already but we had the wrong main bearings and the right ones were supposed to arrive this morning. Turns out they didn't ship them so they are driving them down from Sacramento. Should be here any time and things can be assembled. :) Attachment 2589 Attachment 2590 Short block is finally together. :) Attachment 2591 Attachment 2592 Attachment 2593 |

The motor is finally finished and at home. I'll drop it in this weekend and then I need to get busy! I have 2 spare pistons in case I do something stupid. These things are ridiculous!

Didn't touch it for the last week since its been close to 110 degrees out. Dropped the motor in today. Slipped in just fine with the blower and accessories on. Attachment 2569 |

The serpentine accessory drive finally arrived from Procharger. Now I can run A/C with the F2. Also, the manifold is almost finished. Just need to get it powder coated.

This is a great thread. A shame more people aren’t following it. The forced induction forum used to be fairly active.

This is pretty! Nice work so far!

The Dominator hat arrived from Steve Morris a couple of weeks ago. And the manifold is finally powder coated. Now I can bolt it on and finish hooking everything up. The car is scheduled to go to BRE Rods and Classics in a couple weeks to finish the EFI so the car will be ready for the dyno.

Re: F2 427SBC '69 Camaro
I've seen a ton of the Dominator stuff on RKG and HRG. Are you going to let it self tune first, then do the tune, or straight to the tune?
|
Re: F2 427SBC '69 Camaro
This thread make me wish I was 30 years younger so I could start a project like this. Appears so well thought out and carefully executed.

Some progress this weekend. Procharger sent me the wrong accessory drive when I ordered in in early January. The correct one arrived on Friday.

Looking good. Noob question: what are the studs in the lifter valley?

Re: F2 427SBC '69 Camaro
I like the coil pack mounts on the valve covers; super clean! The accessory brackets are really nice too. I need a first gen, I am overly jealous about all the room you have under the hood.

It runs! Still needs to be tuned, the idle is too low.

Here's a buddy's 383 built on a Dart Iron Eagle block. Vortech S/C, air to water intercooler, Brodix heads and intake, Lemons custom headers, MoTeC M8000 engine management, 8 LSx coils..... In a 1997 30th Anniversary SS convertible.
1,350 HP at the flywheel. Car ran low 8's at 166+ MPH. I'll delete this so it doesn't interfere with your thread.... just thought you might be interested. I'll try and post a vid of it in action. |
Re: F2 427SBC '69 Camaro
Man that looks tight in there Fred. I wish we had the room of the gen 1's.

Re: F2 427SBC '69 Camaro
Things just keep going wrong, creating delays. On Monday I heard something in the valvetrain. I had the shop that built the engine order a couple small parts. They showed up Wednesday. They were wrong. On Thursday they were supposed to ship the correct parts for delivery Friday. They forgot. So today I finally get the parts and get it running. I need to get it above 150 degrees so it will go in closed loop mode and the ECU will start making adjustments. As soon as it got above 150, it started running much better. Engine temps are good. It was 100 today and it ran about 170. I didn't turn the fans on until it got to 180. Now that it ran for about 30 minutes, I have an oil leak or two. I'll work on that tomorrow. Here's a video from today. :beers:

Just a loud clatter as opposed to the nice sound similar to a sewing machine.
I run the Crower Severe-Duty Cutaway solid rollers. Nowhere near the cam specs you have, but we wanted 7,000+ RPM for the nitrous..... split personality engine, able to pass emissions for street driving, plus a 300-shot |

Finally got the car tuned today It did not make the power it should yet because of two constraints. First is no intercooler. The car will have an intercooler after the chassis work is done. Any intercooler I do now would need to be done again when the strut front and big tire back half are completed. The second is the boost. When the kit arrived I ran the numbers on the pulley's and I was afraid that the Procharger would be building too much boost down low, and it is. Anyway, here is the video. At the beginning the tuner is just loading the car and checking the response. Because I only had a start up tune it blew all kinds of crap out of the exhaust when he first whacked the throttle. The pulls at the end didn't do that. The first dyno run happened around 2PM in Sacramento, it was 95 degrees at that time. Without the methanol the intake temps were 230. This wasn't on a full pull, it was a preliminary no load pull. With the twin nozzle meth system it dropped the temps to 190. Still high. With 14 degrees of timing it made 700RWHP on a Mustang dyno. The dyno chart is from the first pull with 9 degrees of timing.

Re: F2 427SBC '69 Camaro
Got bored so I put two GoPro's under the back of the car and took it out for a little drive.
|
Re: F2 427SBC '69 Camaro
Put the Camaro on the chassis dyno this morning and it made 31,221.95RWHP! https://www.chevelles.com/forums/ima...s/laughing.gif
The dyno actually showed that, but of course it was wrong. We never did get a good number. The owner said that some higher power cars make so much vibration in addition to interference from the ignition that the dyno has a problem. To dyno a friends car they had to move the computer outside and wrap it in cardboard and seat cushions. That car made 1,400+RWHP. They updated the dyno recently and the cables are too short to do this now. Here are a couple attempts. The car is extremely loud at full throttle. I don't realize it because I'm always in the car when its at full throttle. I recently moved the intake air temp sensor so it was reading a true value after the methanol injection. The intake temps are about 100 degrees cooler than what the other sensor read. That's why we didn't go for a number when I ran it last time. Now that the ECU has the real temps I'm ready to see what it will make. |
