double keyed cranks & FI eng's
double keyed cranks & FI eng's
How many people fell this should be done, getting the crank and hub double keyed for a super charged eng.
Is spining the hub or snaping the keyway something that happens, or is this just one of those things...
i am doing a 355 T-Trim with an 8rib belt, my parts are on order from eagle and they do not sell the crank doubles keyed i have to send it out, realy no big deal. But there is allot of extra cost here..
people have been SC small block for ever so why is this need or is this a race thing, Is this just for the LT1 and why...
I am kinds up in the air..on this
Need some help thx

Re: double keyed cranks & FI eng's
Typically people break the balancer hubs at the keyway groove. The crank is generally damaged when it spins.
Unfortunately unless the 2 keyway grooves are absolutely perfectly located only 1 will carry the majority of the load. Remeber a second groove also removes metal weakening the crank.... meaning the keyway is less likely to shear, but the crank is more likely to snap.
I would not worry about dual keying unless you intend over approx 16-18# boost, then everything is at risk.
Be sure to measure for the proper crank to hub interference fit. This is critical.

Re: double keyed cranks & FI eng's
Why are they cracking, is it just boost related...yes i understand there i ALLOt of load on the crank snot with the charger hanging off...if i stayed with an 8rib would this help,
Would a 12rib be harded on the snot....what about the brack that PSJ posted would this help ....

From what a lot of people are saying, it is the "cheapness" of the Eagle cranks. Some people claim they are not as tough as they claim. There was a thread on here not too long ago about this same topic and that there is a class action lawsuit being filed!
Re: double keyed cranks & FI eng's
i had a fluid damper crack on me and was luck enough not to damage the crank. later went with the ati damper single key turning an f1-procharger with no problems in two years

That's good to know, I am wanting to go with an F1 and I am planning on using a ATI Superdamper with keyed hub. I hope it works as well for me as it did you.
